Dr Siri Paiboun may be in his 73rd year, but he’s still as sturdy as a jungle boar – and as crafty as one. Reluctant coroner to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, he’s been despatched to the country’s mountainous north, where the sudden appearance of a mummified arm protruding from a concrete path laid in front of the president’s new mansion has caused an understandable degree of embarrassment.

When a blind, retired dentist is run down by a logging truck as he crosses the road to post a letter, Dr Siri Paiboun, official and only coroner of Laos, finds him faced with his most explosive case yet. The dentist’s mortal remains aren’t nearly as intriguing as the letter in his pocket. Written in invisible ink and encrypted, the letter presents Dr Siri with an irresistible challenge.

Laos, 1972. The Communist Pathet Lao has taken over. Most of the educated class has fled, but 72-year-old Dr Siri Paiboun, a Paris-trained doctor, remains and is appointed state coroner. When three bodies are recovered from a reservoir, Dr.Siri establishes the cause of death was not drowning - they seem to have been electrocuted. And then there is the inexplicable death of a Party bigwig's wife at a banquet. Dr.Siri doesn't think her death was from natural causes.

Against all his expectations, Dr Siri Paiboun has rather enjoyed his first five months in office. Now, as hot-season nights close in, Siri is spirited away from Laos' steamy capital on a Matter of National Security. Arriving in Luang Prabang, he's a busy man, examining carbonized corpses, dining with the deposed king, attending a shamans' conference and being rescued by the ghost of an elephant. Not that Siri's complaining … Luang Prabang is in mountains and a good fifteen degrees cooler.

It is 1980, and the Democratic People's Republic of Laos is proud to be competing in its first-ever Olympics. Of course half the world is boycotting the Moscow Summer Olympic Games to protest Russia's recent invasion of Afghanistan, but that has made room for athletes from countries that are usually too small or underfunded to be competitive-countries like Laos.

Laos, 1981: When an unofficial mailman drops off a strange bilingual diary, Dr. Siri is intrigued. Half is in Lao, but the other half is in Japanese, which no one Siri knows can read; it appears to have been written during the Second World War. Most mysterious of all, it comes with a note stapled to it: Dr. Siri, we need your help most urgently. But who is “we”, and why have they left no return address?

Dr. Siri Paiboun, the ex-national coroner of Laos, may have more experience dissecting bodies than making art, but when he manages to smuggle a fancy movie camera into the country he devises a plan to shoot a Lao adaptation of War and Peace. The only problem? The Ministry of Culture must approve the script first. That and he can't figure out how to turn on the camera. Meanwhile, the skeleton of a woman has appeared under the Anusawari Arch in the middle of the night. Siri assists his friend, the newly promoted Senior Police Inspector Phosy Vongvichai, with the ensuing investigation.

Thailand, 1996: Supot, a postman with the Royal Thai Mail service, hates his job. The only bright spot in his life is watching classic movies with his best friend, Ali, the owner of a video store. These cinephiles adore the charisma of the old Western stars, particularly the actresses, and bemoan the state of modern Thai cinema—until a mysterious cassette, entitled Bangkok 2010, arrives at Ali’s store.

Laos, 1979: Retired coroner Siri Paiboun and his wife, Madame Daeng, have never been able to turn away a misfit. As a result they share their small Vientiane house with an assortment of homeless people, mendicants, and oddballs. One of these oddballs is Noo, a Buddhist monk who rides out on his bicycle one day and never comes back, leaving only a cryptic note in the refrigerator - a plea to help a fellow monk escape across the Mekong River to Thailand. Naturally, Siri can't turn down the adventure.

Laos, 1979: Dr. Siri Paiboun, the twice retired ex-National Coroner of Laos, receives an unmarked package in the mail. Inside is a handwoven pha sin, a colorful traditional skirt worn in northern Laos. A lovely present, but who sent it to him, and why? And, more importantly, why is there a severed human finger stitched into the sin's lining?

Viel lieber würde Dr. Siri Paiboun wie gewöhnlich Leichen untersuchen, doch ist er zu einer politischen Konferenz im Norden von Laos geschickt worden. Da fällt einer der Genossen tot vom Stuhl, Dr. Siris Diagnose: Langeweile. Währenddessen schlägt sich seine Assistentin Dtui in der Hauptstadt mit einer Leiche herum, die sich als höchst explosiv erweist. In ihrem Bauch findet sich eine Handgranate, die wohl für Dr. Siri gedacht war. Und plötzlich bekommt Dr. Siri es mit einem Fall zu tun, der die Langeweile rasch verfliegen lässt..

Kriminalreporterin Jimm Juree leidet unter Provinzblues. Nachdem ihre Mutter die fragwürdige Idee hatte, ein renovierungsbedürftiges Hotel zu kaufen, lebt die exzentrische Sippe in einem verschlafenen Nest - und Jimm sieht ihre Karrierechancen schwinden. Doch eines Morgens schlagen Jimms Hunde beim Gassigehen Alarm: Irgendein Strandgut ist äußerst interessant, nur leider zu groß zum Apportieren.

Fechten ist im Laos der Siebzigerjahre nicht gerade ein Breitensport, trotzdem landen in der Pathologie von Vientiane innerhalb kürzester Zeit drei Frauen auf dem Seziertisch, die mit einem gezielten Stich ins Herz ermordet wurden. Ein mysteriöser Kriminalfall - genau das Richtige für Dr. Siri und sein Team. Ein Täter scheint zwar bald gefunden. Allein, der scharfsinnige Pathologe glaubt nicht recht an die Schuld des Mannes.

Vientiane, 1980: For a man of his age and in his corner of the world, Dr. Siri, the 76-year-old former national coroner of Laos, is doing remarkably well - especially considering the fact that he is possessed by a 1,000-year-old Hmong shaman. That is, until he finds a mysterious note tied to his dog's tail. The death threat is not just aimed at him, but at everyone he holds dear. And whoever wrote the note claims the job will be executed in two weeks. Thus, at the urging of his wife and his motley crew of faithful friends, Dr. Siri must figure out who wants him dead.

Seit Jimm Juree mit ihrer schrägen Sippe in das Küstendorf Maprao im Süden Thailands übergesiedelt ist, vermisst sie die Lichter der Stadt. Am meisten aber vermisst sie ihre Karriere als Reporterin. Schweren Herzens muss sie nun mit Aufträgen für das kleine Lokalblatt vorliebnehmen. Ihr aktueller Job: den Engländer Conrad Coralbank interviewen, seines Zeichens Autor erfolgreicher Kriminalromane. Kurz darauf verschwinden plötzlich mehrere Frauen, unter ihnen auch Coralbanks Gattin. Und plötzlich hat Jimm es nicht nur mit Vermisstenfällen und einem potenziellen Serienkiller zu tun, sondern auch mit einem kapitalen Sturm, der direkt auf Maprao zusteuert.

Dr. Siri, der so dickköpfige wie brillante Leichenbeschauer von Laos, muss in die Provinz: Ein bizarrer Fund sorgt für Unruhe in Houaphan...

Der pensionierte Leichenbeschauer Dr. Siri Paiboun hat ein neues Hobby: seine schicke neue Kamera, mit der er eine laotische Adaption von Krieg und Frieden drehen will – vorausgesetzt er findet den Einschaltknopf. Doch vor seinem Regiedebüt muss er Polizeiinspektor Phosy bei Ermittlungen helfen. Mitten in der Nacht ist das Skelett einer Frau aufgetaucht – sitzend unter dem Triumphbogen der Stadt. Und obwohl die Tote erst kürzlich verstorben ist, ist nur noch ihr Skelett vorhanden.

In einem laotischen Dorf geschieht Merkwürdiges: Bei einem Überfall wird eine Frau getötet. Es folgen Trauerfeier und Einäscherung - kurz darauf taucht das Opfer wieder auf, kerngesund und bester Laune. Und weil die Frau seit dem Vorfall offenbar eine spirituelle Verbindung ins Jenseits pflegt, gelingt es ihr, den Fundort lange verschollener Gebeine zu bestimmen.

Sieht aus, als könnte Dr. Siri endlich in Rente gehen. Obwohl der Pathologe seine Arbeit liebt, ermüdet den bald Achtzigjährigen der Job zunehmend. Außerdem möchte er vor seinem baldigen, vom örtlichen Wahrsager prophezeiten Tod mehr Zeit mit seiner Gattin verbringen. Doch zu früh gefreut! Siri erhält einen Auftrag von der laotischen Regierung: Er soll die internationale Suche nach einem amerikanischen Piloten überwachen, dessen Hubschrauber ein Jahrzehnt zuvor über dem thailändischen Dschungel abstürzte.
