Marstin Hardgrove was orphaned at a young age, forced to live on the streets, and needed to turn to thievery to survive. When a job goes wrong and the young man was caught, he was forced to eat a handful of dirt and rocks before being abandoned to die; unbeknownst to Marstin, he also ended up swallowing a tiny dungeon crystal.

After traveling across the entirety of the Sealance Empire and the deserts of Lowenthal, Larek has returned home to the Kingdom of Androthe to find that the situation is quite different from what he remembered. Not only are there massive Apertures called Calamities consuming large portions of the landscape, but most of his friends are also scattered to locations unknown around the Kingdom. Worse yet, they have no idea who he is because of the Dominion magic used on them before he was transported to the Empire.

Tom, his sister, and their grandma survive the perilous trip from San Francisco to their ranch in Southern Oregon using their prepper skills to keep them alive during the anarchy around them. They continue to lead a small band of friends through the chaos and anarchy that has shattered their world.
