A young British prince John visits rural Pennsylvania as part of a royal visit with his family over the Christmas period. They visit an Amish community as a spontaneous part of their tour so the party were not surrounded by press and security. Prince John was getting bored, and was kicking a stone in the dust on the edge of a tour of the community, when he notices a young Amish boy of a similar age named Abe.

Anna had lived in the community all of her life, not even leaving for Rumspringa when all of her friends had done so. She loved her family, her community, and everything about their culture and faith...apart from one little thing that had troubled her all her days. The culture dictated that she should not sing and dance too much in public, not be loud or attract attention upon herself, and should be quiet most of the time. The problem Anna had with this, was that she loved to sing, to dance, to be bright and outgoing, and to be a positive soul in the world.

Mary and Ruth are the best of friends. Ruth leaves the village to work for a year at her relatives' farm in the community on the other side of town and so leaves her friend for a year. Whilst away, Ruth falls in love with a young man at the village, but is unsure if he feels the same way. Mary misses her friend very much and becomes lonesome after her mother dies in a farming accident.

When she finds a semi-conscious and barely alive man laying on his side in a snow drift, her life is turned upside down. She nurses the man back to health but the elders are angry and wanting the stranger gone from their community. Linda and the man become fond of each other and as things get tense in the village, a strange twist of fate will bring the stranger into the heart of Amish events, and this could lead to him leaving the village forever, or staying as a hero in their midst and starting a new life with Linda.

Mark King was an elderly Amish man who lived alone. Partly out of choice, and partly because his seven (now adult) children could no longer cope with his ways. He did care about things and people, but felt unable to show it. Each year when Christmas comes around he feels himself becoming more stern and angry and resentful. He does not celebrate Christmas at all other than to attend prayer meetings etc., and distances himself from the community for weeks at a time. The forest on the edge of the community was not often entered into by the community folk due to children telling stories of things going on that were not normal or safe.
