Tolstoy wrote Anna Karenina in 1875, 13 years after he was married to his beloved wife Sophia. It is clear from recovered diaries that he was devoted to her, but also struggled with what he called a “torturous struggle of lust” and was very open with Sophia that “he was not in control of himself”. Tolstoy and Sophia had 13 children and their marriage survived to the end of Tolstoy’s life.

Anna Karenina is a complex novel in eight parts with more than a dozen major characters. The narrative deals with themes of betrayal, faith, family, marriage, and Russian society against a backdrop of rapid transformation due to the liberal reforms of Emperor Alexander II. The plot revolves around an extramarital affair between Anna and the cavalry officer Count Alexei Vronsky that scandalizes Saint Petersburg society and compels the young lovers to flee to Italy in search of an elusive happiness.

Er macht Karriere, weil Karriere als erstrebenswert proklamiert wird, er heiratet, weil das Heiraten als obligatorischer Begleitzustand des guten Tons angesehen wird und erfüllt seine Arbeit innerhalb der geforderten Richtlinien, wobei er nicht den geringsten Gedanken daran verschwendet, dass es Menschen gibt, die die Dinge anders sehen könnten als er.

Mit einfachen Worten Geschichten von unfassbarer Schönheit und Wahrheit zu erzählen - das konnte kaum jemand so gut wie Leo Tolstoi. Zutiefst vom christlichen Glauben und Menschenfreundlichkeit geprägt sind diese Geschichten.

Seine einfache Sprache, die gleichzeitig so fesselnd ist, entwickelt eine Wucht, der der Hörer sich nicht entziehen kann. Ein Bauer macht ein Geschäft mit Landbesitzern: Er darf soviel Land für sich beanspruchen, wie er innerhalb eines Tages umlaufen kann.
