Volume ten launches with Doug Bradley's well-researched insight into the stories and their authors. This is followed by HP Lovecraft's evocative tale of exploration, "The Strange High House in the Mist". Next we hear Ambrose Bierce's truly chilling "A Diagnosis of Death", and Jeffery Combs reads Edgar Allan Poe's classic revenge tale, "The Cask of Amontillado".

Trapped by the strength of the public adoration of his character Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle was desperate to write other works not involving the sleuth. The Tales of Terror and Mystery have all the recognisable qualities that made Conan Doyle's work so popular - the attention to gruesome detail, the meticulous logic and the intricate and wittily bemusing plotting - yet they are free of the constraints put on Conan Doyle by Mr. Holmes.

In October 1916, Conan Doyle announced in the journal light his conversion to spiritualism. During the last years of his life, he became the crusader of this movement that preaches salvation of humanity through science. Thus, from 1920 to 1923, he gave a series of lectures about spiritualism in Australia, in USA, and in Canada. He published his autobiography, Memories and Adventures, in 1924 and opened a bookstore dedicated to spiritualism, The Psychic Bookshop in London, where he handled the editing of his own works.

Next up, Ambrose Bierce plays with time in "The Suitable Surroundings".

Holmes encounters one of his most formidable adversaries and must unlock the mystery of the demonic hound, the curse of the Baskerville family. Published in The Strand magazine in episodes between August 1901 and April 1902, The Hound of the Baskervilles became one of the most popular of all the Sherlock Holmes mysteries.

In A Study in Scarlet, Holmes and Watson's first mystery, the pair are summoned to a south London house where they find a dead man whose contorted face is a twisted mask of horror. A tired and battle scarred surgeon returns to London after being wounded in the third Afghan war. After his money starts to run low, a chance encounter leads him to take a flat with an eccentric man at 221B Baker Street. Thus begins the famous crime-solving partnership of the Holmes and Watson duo.

Episode 2: "Our Eyes Have Seen Great Wonders", by Arthur Conan Doyle, dramatised by Chris Harrald: Professor Challenger and his team are marooned on the isolated Amazonian plateau, at the mercy of dinosaurs and a murderous tribe of hominids.

In these four tales from Sherlock Holmes's case book, we find the great detective summoned to investigate the mysterious bones which just won't stay buried at Shoscombe Old Place. We see him deducing why a hitherto devoted lion should have turned savagely on its keeper.

The Lost World is the account of a scientific expedition by four highspirited Englishmen - two scientists, a biggame hunter, and a journalist - deep into the Amazon jungle. In this region, cut off from the outside world by unscalable vertical cliffs and fetid swamps, they encounter a world where dinosaurs roam free and natives fight a murderous war with their fierce neighbors, the apemen. Trapped on the isolated plateau with only hunting rifles as protection the four must use savvy and intellect to escape from this primeval terror.

"A Scandal in Bohemia" was the first of Arthur Conan Doyle's 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories to be published in The Strand Magazine. Holmes did not think much of the "fair sex" until the met a character in this story, Irene Adler, who became to him "the woman".

Edward Malone, a young reporter for the Daily Gazette, asks his editor for a dangerous assignment to impress the woman he loves, Gladys, who wishes for a great man capable of brave deeds and actions. His task is to approach the notorious Professor Challenger, who dislikes the popular press intensely and physically assaults intrusive journalists. The subject is to be his recent South American expedition which, surrounded by controversy, guarantees a hostile reaction.

Lifeblood is set seven years after Dracula's apparent demise at the hands of Jonathan Harker and his five compatriots in the forests of the Carpathian Mountains. Sherlock Holmes is asked by Mina Harker to help track down what she believes is the returning vampire before he takes his revenge. But she may be too late.

The Sherlock Holmes series read in unabridged form, by David Timson for Naxos AudioBooks, is widely regarded as one of the finest.
