"The Temple" is a short story written by H. P. Lovecraft in 1920, and first published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales #24 in September 1925. The story is narrated as a "found manuscript" penned by Karl Heinrich, Graf von Altberg-Ehrenstein, a lieutenant-commander in the Imperial German Navy during the days of World War I. Altberg begins by declaring that he has decided to document the events leading up to his untimely end in order to "set certain facts" before the public, aware that he will not survive to do so himself.

Reflective, unhurried, and artistically rich tale about a painter who rests in a cottage by the ocean, sensing mysterious presences on the beach and in the water. The story focuses on the sensations and intuitions of the main character, imbuing the whole narrative with an evocative taste of elusive dread, quite distinct from overt horror.

Azathoth is a deity in the Cthulhu Mythos and Dream Cycle stories of writer H. P. Lovecraft and other authors. He is the ruler of the Outer Gods. In the Vault was based on a suggestion made in August 1925 by Charles W. Smith, editor of the amateur journal Tryout, which Lovecraft recorded in a letter: 'an undertaker imprisoned in a village vault where he was removing winter coffins for spring burial, and his escape by enlarging a transom reached by the piling up of the coffins'.

The story is narrated by the scion of the Delapore family, who has moved from Massachusetts to his ancestral estate in England, known as Exham Priory. On several occasions, the protagonist and his cats hear the sounds of rats scurrying behind the walls. Upon investigating further, he finds that his family maintained an underground city for centuries and that the inhabitants of the city fed on human flesh, even going so far as to raise generations of human cattle, who eventually began to de-evolve due to their sub-human living conditions.

George Campbell sets out with a tent into the Canadian forests to find respite from work. There, he comes across a crystalline cube that exhibits extraordinary properties – the longer one gazes at it, the more it glows, beginning to hypnotize the observer. Campbell is reminded of the story of the so-called Eltdown Shards, whose alleged translation spoke of crystalline cubes and a race of entities sending minds into the Universe for exploration using such cubes.

A doctor who treats a person afflicted with leprosy using macabre methods is an unstable physician. Although Rimel admitted that he wrote the story himself and Lovecraft only made stylistic corrections, the work is characterized by the very distinct style of the latter. Even though the writer from Providence congratulated his junior colleague on the text and claimed to have made only minor corrections, it could have been a typical courtesy on his part. A supporter of the hypothesis of Lovecraft's authorship is that Rimel did not create anything else in a similar style.
