Plutarco, vissuto nel I secolo d.C., scrisse alcune brevi opere di estremo interesse e più che mai attuali, denominate "Moralia". Ne fa parte il "De esu carnium - Del mangiar carne", una sorta di "manifesto" contro l'usanza dell'epoca di mangiare carne. In questa breve opera, che ci è giunta incompiuta, l'autore dimostra il suo profondo amore per gli animali ed esprime con veemenza e con motivazioni del tutto logiche il suo disgusto e il suo disprezzo per gli uomini che si cibano di carne.

Il "Dhammapada", detto anche "percorso del Dharma", è un testo del Canone buddhista che si trova anche in quello cinese e tibetano. È formato da 423 versetti raccolti in 26 capitoli. Si dice che sia stato realmente pronunciato da Gautama Buddha. Il Dhammapada - ossia "La Giusta Via"- non può essere considerato un libro solo religioso. La parola "dio" non è mai presente, tuttavia non si tratta nemmeno di un testo "filosofico" o agnostico.
