Im November 2023 verabschiedeten wir mit einer festlichen Abschlussveranstaltung die Reihe "Schwebende Bücher". Bis dahin hatten wir alle sechs Wochen vor interessiertem Publikum über die von uns in diesem Zeitraum gelesenen Bücher gesprochen und das Gesagte im Podcast "Schwebende Bücher" veröffentlicht. Once there was a bad little boy whose name was Jim - though, if you will notice, you will find that bad little boys are nearly always called James in your Sunday-school books. It was strange, but still it was true that this one was called Jim. He didn't have any sick mother either - a sick mother who was pious and had the consumption, and would be glad to lie down in the grave and be at rest but for the strong love she bore her boy, and the anxiety she felt that the world might be harsh and cold towards him when she was gone.

"The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg" is a piece of short fiction by Mark Twain. It first appeared in Harper's Monthly in December 1899, and was subsequently published by Harper & Brothers in the collection The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg and Other Stories and Sketches (1900). Some see this story "as a replay of the Garden of Eden story", and associate the corrupter of the town with Satan. Hadleyburg enjoys the reputation of being an "incorruptible" town known for its responsible, honest people that are trained to avoid temptation.

Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was very enamored with his daughter, Susi, and remained so up to her untimely death at age 24 in 1896. In 1875, at the age of 3, she had written her first letter to Santa Claus. As a writer and loving father, Twain, couldn't stand for his young daughter to feel like her work went unheard, so he penned the following letter to "My Dear Susie Clemens" from "The Man in the Moon" himself.

"A Dog's Tale" is a short story written by Mark Twain. It first appeared in the December 1903 issue of Harper's Magazine. In January of the following year it was extracted into a stand-alone pamphlet published for the National Anti-Vivisection Society. Still later in 1904 it was expanded into a book published by Harper & Brothers.

The Mysterious Stranger is a novel attempted by the American author Mark Twain. He worked on it intermittently from 1897 through 1908. Twain wrote multiple versions of the story; each involves a supernatural character called "Satan" or "No. 44". All the versions remained unfinished (with the debatable exception of the last one, No. 44, the Mysterious Stranger). In 1590, three boys, Theodor, Seppi, and Nikolaus, live relatively happy simple lives in a remote Austrian village called Eseldorf (German for "Assville" or "Donkeytown").

Querkopf Wilson (Originaltitel: Pudd'nhead Wilson. Those Extraordinary Twins.) ist ein Roman von Mark Twain. Schauplatz der Geschichte ist die heimelige, etwas verschlafene Kleinstadt Dawson's Landing am Mississippi, die wie Deer Lick (in Eine Bluttat, ein Betrug und ein Bund fürs Leben) und auch wie St. Petersburg (in Tom Sawyer) an Mark Twains Heimatstadt Hannibal in Missouri erinnert.

Auf unserer Schweizerreise waren wir, ich und mein Reisebegleiter Harris, einmal im ›Schweizerhof‹ in Luzern abgestiegen, wo wir ein Tischgespräch hatten, an das ich zeitlebens denken werde. Man ging um 7½ zur Tafel, an der sich eine Menge Angehöriger der verschiedensten Nationalitäten zusammenfanden; doch ließen sich an den ungeheuer langen Tischen besser Kleider als Menschen beobachten, da man die Gesichter meist nur in der Perspektive zu sehen bekam.

1601, written by Mark Twain, is a supposititious conversation which takes place in Queen Elizabeth's closet between the Queen, Ben Jonson, Beaumont, Sir Walter Raleigh, the Duchess of Bilgewater, and one or two others... If there is a decent word findable in it, it is because I overlooked it. 1601 depicts a highfalutin and earthy discussion between the Queen and her court about farting and a variety of sexual peccadillos, narrated disapprovingly and sanctimoniously by the Queen's Cup-Bearer, an eyewitness at the Social Fireside.
