Edgar Allan Poe est l'un des grands auteurs du XIXème siècle. Archétype de l'écrivain maudit, trop génial pour être compris, il a mis dans son œuvre la tristesse, la solitude et le désespoir qui caractérisent tous les incompris. Ses "Histoires Extraordinaires" ne dérogent pas à cette règle, ni d’ailleurs à son goût prononcé pour la découverte scientifique, comme en témoigne "La descente dans le Maelström", sujet du présent enregistrement.

It has been recognized as the first modern detective story; Poe referred to it as one of his "tales of ratiocination". C. Auguste Dupin is a man in Paris who solves the mystery of the brutal murder of two women. Numerous witnesses heard a suspect, though no one agrees on what language was spoken. At the murder scene, Dupin finds a hair that does not appear to be human.

The story involves a young woman haunted by the vengeful spirit of a young bride, whose soul had been trapped for decades within the woman's portrait painted by her insane husband.
