Mit seinem Meisterwerk, im hohen Alter von 67 Jahren begonnen, gelang es Theodor Storm, einen Deichspuk in eine würdige Novelle zu verwandeln, die mit den Beinen auf der Erde steht, ohne den Charakter des Unheimlichen zu verwischen. Storm beendete das Werk im Februar 1888. Bis heute ist die "gewaltige Deichsage" vom Aufstieg und Fall des Hauke Haien ein Muss für alle an deutscher Literatur Interessierten.
