There are many versions of this work in English, and it is included as a useful reflection once one has pondered Daoism’s key texts. The title is properly ‘'Sun Tzu's Military Method'. It was written at the time of the Dao and Zhuang Zi, several centuries before the Lieh Tzu. For fifteen hundred years, it was part of China’s canonical strategic anthology, which became known as the Seven Military Classics.

We owe this book to an unnamed guardian who kept safe the far western borders of a country, Zhou in the fifth century BC. The legend says that exhausted from misunderstanding Teacher with a tired heart went on his last journey - to die in a dessert. The guardian recognized great Lao Tzu, called him by name and, nobody knows how, persuaded the wise man to tell a world about Dao and De.

I didn't set out to create a new translation of the Tao Te Ching when writing The Way. Since Lao Tzu wrote it in the fourth century BC, it has become one of the most widely translated works in the world and hardly needs a new scholarly treatment. Instead, I sought to capture the way the verses have come alive in me with language and metaphors that are more easily understood by a modern Western listener.
