POWs staged shows, concerts and sporting fixtures and took up crafts and pastimes using materials they found around them. Que se passe-t-il dans la cité de Glenfrome en cet après-midi de canicule qui précède le drame ? Cody Swift retourne "à la maison" pour interroger sa propre mère, Julie Swift, qui se souvient de ce terrible dimanche : les cagettes de fraises qu'il faut transformer en confiture, son fils et ses amis, le trio infernal... Quand les trois garçons rentrent pour le goûter, Julie Swift remarque le T-shirt déchiré de son fils et lui interdit de ressortir avec ses amis pour le punir. Scott et Charlie repartent, c'est la dernière fois que Cody les voit.

Très rapidement au cours de l'enquête, Sydney Noyce, vingt-quatre ans, devient le suspect numéro 1 : enfant dans un corps d'adulte, il connait bien les trois garçons, passe du temps avec eux au chenil du cynodrome, et une résidente de la cité affirme l'avoir vu suivre Charlie et Scott vers 20h15 le soir de leur disparition. Tout semble logique. Mais l'est-ce vraiment ? Et si Sydney n'était pas celui que les policiers croient ? Que faire de ces incohérentes troublantes dans les témoignages ?

Parfois, plusieurs dizaines d'années plus tard, une nouvelle information, un petit souvenir extrait de l'oubli, un chauffeur de taxi qui se souvient tout à coup de quelque chose en entendant le podcast à la radio, permet de complètement changer la donne... La vérité sur le meurtre de Charlie et Scott est enfin révélée.

Un suspect trop parfait, des aveux trop faciles... Julie McDowell, avocate commise d'office et présente lors du premier interrogatoire de Sydney, avait déjà le sentiment que quelque chose clochait dans cette affaire. Que s'est-il passé entre Sydney et les membres de la brigade criminelle avant les interrogatoires officiels ? Vingt ans plus, c'est Owen Weston, journaliste d'investigation, qui fait part de ses doutes et revient sur les zones d'ombre du procès de Sydney Noyce... et ce, malgré les intimidations.

Deux avions puis des centaines de kilomètres de route plus tard, Cody Swift arrive sur la côte nord de la Norvège, dans un petit village au milieu de nulle part pour rencontrer Howard Smail, ex-inspecteur chargé de l'enquête sur les meurtres de Charlie et de Scott.

C'est un des aspects de l'enquête qui n'a jamais été approfondi : dans son dernier souffle, alors que l'inspecteur Fletcher le tenait dans ses bras, Charlie Paige aurait prononcé le mot "Fantôme". Parlait-il de son meurtrier ? D'autre chose ? C'est ce que Cody Swift tente de découvrir dans cet épisode.
