"True Christianity is a fight," wrote J. C. Ryle in 1877. He argued that from the day of their conversion until the day they die, Christians are called to be soldiers for Christ in a war for their holiness. This inspiring call to action written more than 100 years ago continues to be a source of great encouragement and inspiration for believers today.

The reader will soon discover that I am an enthusiastic admirer of the men whose lives and ministries I have narrated in this volume. I confess it honestly. I am a thorough admirer of them. I firmly believe that, with the exceptions of Martin Luther and his contemporaries and our own martyred reformers, the world has not seen any such men since the days of the apostles. I now send forth this volume with an earnest prayer that God will pardon all its imperfections, use it for His own glory, and raise up in His church today men like those who are here described.

To attain simplicity in preaching is of the utmost importance to every minister who wishes to be useful to souls. Unless you are simple in your sermons, you will never be understood, and unless you are understood, you cannot do good to those who hear you. Of course, the first objective of a minister should be to preach the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth as it is in Jesus. But the next thing he ought to aim at is for his sermon to be understood, and it will not be understood by most of his congregation if it is not simple.

It has been a long time since there have been as many ideas and events in our world causing fear and anxiety as there are today. But one thing, in any event, is clear, and that is the duty of Christians to search more diligently than ever the prophetic Scriptures. Let us compare prophecies fulfilled with prophecies unfulfilled and attempt to make the one illustrate the other. Let us strive, above all, to obtain clear views of the things we should be expecting, both in the church and the world, before the end comes and time will be no more.

Striving for holiness should be a goal for all followers of Christ, yet it is often viewed as too overwhelming of an undertaking or as simply not as important as the more immediate demands of daily life.

Whoever neglects the second coming of Christ has only a mutilated gospel, for the Bible teaches us not only of the death and sufferings of Christ, but also of his return to reign in honor and glory. His second coming is referred to over 300 times. There is hardly any church that does not make a great deal of baptism, yet in all of Paul's epistles, baptism is spoken of only 13 times, while he speaks about the return of our Lord 50 times, and yet the church has had very little to say about it. The devil does not want us to see this truth, for nothing would wake up the church so much.

There are some men in the pages of history, whose greatness no person of common sense thinks of disputing. They tower above the herd of mankind, like the Pyramids, the Parthenon, and the Colosseum, among buildings. Such men were Luther and Augustine, Gustavus Adolphus and George Washington, Columbus and Sir Isaac Newton. He who questions greatness must be content to be thought very ignorant, very prejudiced, or very eccentric. Public opinion has come to a conclusion about them - they were great men.

Solomon says that the glory of young men is their strength (Prov. 20:29). Young men have so much to give the church, but sadly the modern church has taught them nothing about how to exercise their strength in a godly way. This book by 19th-century pastor J.C. Ryle is short, but gives young men what they need: straight talk about being a Christian man. Ryle does not mince words when describing the temptations to pride, lust, laziness, and more. This classic is a powerful reminder from a wise man about how to be strong in the Lord and to give no opportunity to the devil.

The Holy Spirit might seem like a rather vague and complicated subject. Anywhere we encounter the spirit in the Bible, it is presented as a force present during moments of great importance. Ryle expands on the importance and necessity of The Holy Spirit in man’s road to redemption.

JC Ryle states that of all the Christian concepts, the Lord’s Supper might be the most misunderstood. Christ said, "eat, drink: do this in remembrance of me." But Ryle explains that not all of us can be invited to the table and that only those with true faith and a true heart can do so in full understanding of its significance.

The garden is possibly one of the most significant symbols in the Bible. Christ calls all of his believers, his "Garden". J.C. Ryle explains that true believers are a garden because they are not part of the wilderness, not part of the world, but rather of a safe space enclosed in purity.
