Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, is a poem, translated by Bayard Taylor, which tells the beautiful and emotional story of a man who has seen and done it all. However, despite all of his learning and education, his life still feels empty and unaccomplished. He believes wholeheartedly that there is something else out there. Story is the narrative of a princess, whose husband has gone out hunting. The Sorrows of Young Werther is a loosely based autobiographical novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It was first published in 1774 and is one of the most famous-and infamous-works in the history of literature. Werther, a sensitive young man falls in love with Lotte, a sweet-natured girl he meets while visitng an idyllic German village. Although Lotte is betrothed to Albert, Werther’s infatuation with her torments him to the point of despair and suicide.

Wilhelm übergibt einem Verleger in Leipzig die Briefe seines Freundes Werther. Gemeinsam lesen sie: Auf einem Ball lernt Werther die junge Lotte, Tochter des Amtmanns, kennen. Er wird ständiger Gast in ihrem Haus und ein Freund der Familie. Seine Liebe zu Lotte ist hoffnungslos, denn sie ist mit Albert verlobt, einem Mann, der ihr eine gesicherte Zukunft garantiert. Werther dagegen ist ein Schwärmer, der gegen die gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse aufbegehrt. Er trennt sich von Lotte, nimmt eine Arbeit in der Kanzlei eines Gesandten auf. Die Unerträglichkeit der Arbeit und die Brüskierung durch den Adel lassen ihn fliehen und in die Umgebung von Lotte, die inzwischen mit Albert verheiratet ist, zurückkehren.

Goethes erster Roman erzählt die Geschichte der Liebe des jungen Werther zu einer Frau - die bereits vergeben ist. Diese verbotene Liebe endet tragisch.

Aus dem Harenberg Literaturlexikon (2003) zu diesem Text: "Die Differenz zwischen Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre und den Wanderjahren markiert den Übergang vom herausgehobenen Individuum ins Zeitalter der Masse und der Maschine. Goethe vermochte hier die Diagnose der Zeit zu stellen und Therapeutica für die Zukunft zu nennen. Die Wanderjahre nehmen das Ideal der autonomen Persönlichkeit zurück und geben Anweisungen zum tätigen Dasein in der republikanischen Gemeinschaft. Die Ausbildung des Menschen zum sozialen Wesen ist Thema des komplizierten Romans". (S. 1085)

Kompliziert ist der Roman fürwahr; nichts zum Hören "nebenbei". Aber einer der wichtigsten Texte der Weltliteratur.

This Autobiography of Goethe has a lengthy introduction and short biography of Goethe's life by Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) and was translated by John Oxenford (1812-1877) in 1848, which was a year of revolutions in Europe. Johann Goethe was a literary celebrity by the age of 25 and was ennobled by the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, Carl August in 1782 after first taking up residence there in November of 1775 following the success of his first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther (available on Librivox).
