Ein "Katechismus" ist seit dem Beginn der Neuzeit ein Handbuch der Unterweisung in den Grundfragen des christlichen Glaubens. Der hier als Hörbuch vorgelegte "Große Katechismus" Martin Luthers dürfte in dieser Form kaum geeignet sein, Atheisten und Andersgläubige für den christlichen Glauben zu gewinnen. Vor rund 500 Jahren hat der Reformator aufgeschrieben, was er für den Kernbestand christlichen Glaubens hielt. Dieser besteht aus fünf "Hauptstücken" die Luther ausführlich kommentiert. Heute würde man diese Erläuterungen ganz, ganz anders formulieren.

The Freedom of the Christian was Martin Luther's first public defense of the doctrine of justification by grace through faith on account of Christ alone. Luther's explosive rediscovery of the Gospel of Jesus Christ shattered the Church of Rome's foundation of works, which considered good works a part of salvation instead of a result of it. Martin Luther wrote his catechisms to provide religious instruction for children, as well new converts or others lacking a deep knowledge of the scripture. Martin Luther's Bondage of the Will (1525) is a response to Desiderius Erasmus's "Diatribe on Free Will.’ The work is considered as one of the great masterpieces of the Reformation. Luther writes powerfully about man's depravity and God's sovereignty in his direct style, which combines spirituality and humor. For Luther, the crucial issue was the ability of free will, and the extent to which it is subject to God's sovereignty.
