G.K. Chesterton was one of the towering figures of British literature in the early twentieth century. A man of massive size, massive personality, and massive appetite, Chesterton famous personality, dress, and personality gave rise to an eponymous adjective: Chestertonian. Although he is renowned for the Father Brown detective series, Chesterton also wrote volumes of nonfiction. The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare tells the story of an anarchist Lucian Gregory, a poet who met Gabriel Syme, a new recruit to a secret anti-anarchist taskforce at Scotland Yard. Syme meets Gregory at a party and debates with him about the meaning of poetry.

The first part of the novel involves debates about rationalism and religion between a Professor Lucifer and a monk named Michael, while the rest of the narrative concerns dispute between a Jacobite Catholic named Maclan and an atheist socialist named Turnbull. Both hold fanatic opinions and prepare for a duel that is proposed but never fought, inspiring a slew of comic adventures with allegorical dimensions.

Chesterton’s greatest works, The Everlasting Man (first published in 1925), along with many of Chesterton’s other works, were heavily influenced by his own spiritual journey into Christianity.
