What you’re about to hear takes place in West Inch, a city on the English-Scottish border. The title is an unusual reference to a shadow forming over the city that’s said to be about the influence and reputation of the infamous Napoleon. This is all a change of literary output by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, famed for his stories about Sherlock Holmes. He had gotten a little tired of that character and turned, at least for a while, to a man named Jock Calder, who was one of the soldiers at the scene of military activity, including the battle of Waterloo.

Dr. Watson wird unerwarteter Weise von seiner Cousine Aethel Gastrell um Hilfe gebeten. Kurzerhand reist er zu ihr nach Sheffield, natürlich nicht ohne Sherlock Holmes Begleitung zu erbitten. Schnell stellt sich heraus, dass Aethels Mann Godric bereits seit sechs Tagen wie vom Erdboden verschluckt zu sein scheint. Holmes und Watson nehmen die Ermittlungen auf und landen noch am selben Tag in Godrics Lieblingskneipe bei seinem besten Freund Berry. Doch bald darauf ist Berry leider nicht mehr in der Lage Holmes und Watson die gewünschten Auskünfte zu erteilen...

Als Holmes und Watson schließlich von Barbara Chadburn die Lebensgeschichte der Gastrells erfahren, ist für Holmes sofort klar, wer für die Morde verantwortlich ist. Jetzt gilt es nur noch, so schnell wie möglich Godric Gastrell zu finden und ihn besten Falls lebendig zu retten. Doch leider hat da noch jemand ein Wörtchen mit zu reden.

Godric ist gerettet! Endlich können Holmes und Watson zurück in die Bakerstreet kehren und zusammen mit Alice, Eddy und den Kindern Ostern feiern. Doch eines lässt Holmes keine Ruhe. Was hat es mit dem Tod von Artus Brumby auf sich, der seiner Meinung nach im direkten Zusammenhang steht? Bald darauf muss Holmes auch noch feststellen, dass nun auch Watson wie vom Erdboden verschluckt zu sein scheint. Als Holmes wenige Zeit später noch eine Entdeckung macht, ist es um seine Contenance geschehen.
