Nachdem Erich Kästner 1933 von den Nazis als Autor verboten worden war, entschloss er sich, ein geheimes Tagebuch zu führen. Dazu griff er auf ein blau eingebundenes, unbeschriftetes Buch zurück, das er zwischen den anderen viertausend Bänden seiner Bibliothek versteckte. Aus Sicherheitsgründen fertigte Kästner seine Aufzeichnungen außerdem stenografisch an.
