1880, Drummond. Aimé Courchesne est bien connu dans la région, puisqu’à peu près tout le monde a recours à ses services pour traverser la rivière Saint-François vers les cantons de Wendover et de Simpson. Aimé s’enorgueillit de cette tâche, léguée de père en fils chez les Courchesne depuis la fondation du village.

1888. Encore ébranlés par la mort d’Aimé Courchesne, sa veuve, Élise, et leurs enfants quittent Lowell, aux États-Unis, pour revenir à Drummond et reprendre leur vie d’avant. Ils espèrent laisser derrière eux tous les malheurs qui se sont abattus sur la famille ces dernières années. Mais le jeune Guillaume, auquel incombe désormais la tâche de faire vivre les siens, trouve cette responsabilité bien lourde.

1900. Pour les enfants Courchesne, ce nouveau siècle s’amorce avec un bien triste événement : le décès de leur mère Élise. Après le deuil, la vie reprend doucement pour Georgiana, Guillaume, Denise, Francesca et Vianney, désormais mariés et presque tous en famille. La jeune Victoire, elle, demeure tourmentée par son passé et les circonstances de son adoption alors qu’elle n’avait que sept ans.

On ne présente plus la comtesse de Ségur, auteur des célèbres Malheurs de Sophie qui édifièrent des générations d'enfants. "Jean qui rit et Jeannot qui pleure" sont deux cousins qui quittent la Bretagne pour aller travailler à Paris. Le caractère agréable de Jean lui attire l'estime et la sympathie de tous ; malgré les bons conseils de son entourage, Jeannot cède de plus en plus à une nature canaille.
