Alyson Prescott moves to Cutters Cove, Oregon, after being placed, along with her mother, in the witness protection program. In her previous life, Alyson was an A-list heiress with the excitement of a trend setting lifestyle and the security of old money. It's December in White Eagle, and Tess and Tony are preparing for a huge Christmas celebration. The town is planning their annual festival, which has Tess and Tony struggling to stay ahead of things. In addition to their work with the festival, Tess fills in for the mail carrier who took over her route, and Tony spends long days with Shaggy working to finish the development of their most recent video game. In spite of their busy schedules, things seem to be going smoothly until an unexpected visitor comes to town with an unusual request.

Alyson is jogging along waters edge when the fog rolls in. She can feel someone watching her but no matter how hard she looks her shadow cannot be seen. When she witnesses a man pushing a woman off the cliff onto the rocks below, she calls the police only to learn that the body of the victim cannot be found. Alyson is certain that she actually did see the murder occur and cannot explain the missing victim so she launches into an investigation with the help of friends Mac and Trevor.

Alyson and the gang head to a ski resort in the Colorado Rockies the week after Christmas. Before they even make it to the house they will be staying at for the week, they stumble across a body in the snow. When they realize that the body is one incident in a series of unusual occurrences, they decide to throw a little sleuthing in with their holiday plans.

In book 10, Tess and Tony plan a secret wedding ceremony, Nona plans a visit, and Tess and Mike plan a face-to-face meeting with their father. In book 11, Tess fills in at the post office. While on route for the first time in a year, she discovers that her father has left her brother Mike with a baby. In book 12, Tony offers to pay for a televised ad promoting the haunted house, and Tess agrees to act as spokesperson.

Tess and Brady plan to use the generous donation to expand the facility. Permanent housing for elderly, sick, and other hard-to-place animals is their main focus, but then Brady decides to go all in on the new service dog and search and rescue training facility. Meanwhile, Tess has her feelings hurt when her dad contacts Tony to ask for help tracking down someone from his past, but as they dig deeper, they begin to wonder if the email even is from her dad.

While the details surrounding the mystery seem to have gaps that can't be explained, things begin to come together after Kelly shares Nora’s story about Cherry with Sam.
