Despite being the most decorated men's basketball coach of all time, this book translates nicely to the business world. There are plenty of basketball stories, but this is by no means exclusively for sports fans. The message is that anyone can learn to be a leader by following the principles of his Pyramid of Success. If you give everything you have to be the best you can be, that is success. Unless you fail, but that means you didn't listen to it correctly, or are just part of the five percent of Americans (or 26 percent of Canadians) who are incapable of leadership.

We did something nontraditional when writing the summary for this nontraditional book. Instead of simply listing 20 contrarian ways, I am going to separate the 20 ideas into three categories. This book suggests the opposite by taking some contrarian ideology from the past that may now be helpful in our changing times.

I figured this book would depict a guy in a fedora with a cigar in his hand who fast talks like a stereotypical 1920s gangster. Alas, I was mistaken. It is a simple acronym. MOXIE is an acronym that stands for (spoiler alert!) Mindfulness, Opportunity, X-factor, Innovation, Engagement. This is a good book. I like it. If you can master these five traits, you are a bold and gutsy leader.

Some of such principles have been misunderstood by many, some undervalued, and yet some that have been taboo in some religious circles over the years.

This book gives all the reasons why employee engagement should be the most important part of your business. It should be a higher priority than the bottom line and profits, if your bottom line is profitable. I think that is obvious. You need to be at least profitable enough to afford a quality two-ply toilet paper. Is that too much to ask for? We aren't monsters. In fact, rule number one of employee engagement should be "Ditch the 80-grit single-ply macho wipe and get the good stuff." Those are the little things that keep employees engaged.

Growing up, the most influential coaches in my formative years always encouraged us to give 110 percent.
