Since before Maella can remember, one family rule has shaped her life: never open a door. Maella comes from a family of doormakers - people who unleash otherworldly violence when they open something even as simple as a cabinet door. But when circumstances force Maella to open a portal, she discovers worlds of nightmarish flying monsters, mystical drug deals, political prisoners, religious cults, and a terrifying prediction: Maella will die upon opening her seventh door.

Light show the way. Darkness show the stars. Maella has broken the one family rule. She has (accidentally) unleashed otherworldly violence on her friends, herself, and the three worlds. But then Maella and her friends are captured and forced to work as torchlighters inside the Tower of Shadows. Now Maella must race against the prediction of her death all while keeping her doormaker abilities a secret, uncovering the truth about her own father, and escaping the Tower of Shadows with her friends. But Maella will also discover her terrifying role in the search for the One Door.

The Tower of Shadows Has Fallen. In order to survive her death prediction, Maella might have just broken all the portals across the three worlds. Maella's best friend, Claritsa, has been kidnapped. Maella's father is still missing. Only Sethlo and the other torchlighters are by her side, but now that the Tower of Shadows has fallen (and all the licatherin is gone along with it), they will soon suffer the effects of krokosod - the flesh-death that results from licatherin withdrawal.

Who will win control of the three worlds? Maella's been captured by General Foster - the very person hunting her family into extinction. He plans to force Maella and her brother to open access to the One Door. Once General Foster controls the One Door, he'll control all the worlds and hunt down the rest of Maella's doormaker family. But when the relic that controls access to the One Door is discovered to be incomplete, Maella is confronted with what seems like her only option for survival: To align herself with Doormaker Tain.
