About this listen

Life as a raider in the Wastes, where monsters roam and the military lurks, is as easy as it sounds.

I’ve been out here for a long time, and the fear that courses through my blood every time I step outside our camp walls to scavenge never fades. No matter how many monsters you face—and have to run for your life from—it doesn’t ever get easier.

But when I come across a bound and injured monster in an abandoned military base, I can’t leave him behind. His presence in our camp is causing tension, but I can’t bring myself to care when I get to see a different side to him—when he starts to show me who he is beneath the pain and lingering trauma.

Despite his gentle nature, I soon discover why others are so desperate to own him; why the military, and now this stranger lurking outside our camp, want to put him back in chains and take him away from me.

Something is hiding under his skin, something that threatens to upend my entire life.

There’s a reason why all other monsters fear him.

The Rycke contains explicit sexual content, graphic depictions of torture and violence, and deals with PTSD. It is book three in the Monstrous series, a post-apocalyptic m/m fantasy series that features monsters and human men falling in love. It is best to listen to the series in order.

Fantastic book, fab narrator

Brilliant series and I have a new favourite narrator. I have listened to the titles available so far on audible back to back this week and I'm going to read the rest on ebook because I can't wait. The narrator is first class, very clear and really gives each character a distinct voice. you always know who is speaking, even the minor characters.

Excellent narration

I have to admit to mainly listening to them for the performance. it's just so well done.
Aury and Gage were a sweet pairing with a lot of hurt/comfort vibes going on.
That last chapter on Aury's pov was just so lovely

This never happens....

Lily Mayne has done something no other author I've read has done... the first 3 books in this series have been 5 stars Reads for me! I am in awe of her writing talent!

Book 3 of her Monstrous series follows Aury (aka The Rycke. Monster) & Ghost (aka Gage. Human). Ghost is a raider living/surviving in the Wastes who is sent out to scavenge things for the raider camp he lives in (Cats camp... the Cat we met in book 2 who his camp believes is missing or dead but we know better) and he does so even though he hates it as he suffers with major anxiety about not being useful and worries he would be kicked out of the camp if he refused. On one such trip with his friend Rig they stumble across a bound & catatonic Rycke who we have seen mentioned in the previous two books so we know has been held and tortured by the military and is feared by all other monsters for... reasons. They set him free and take him back to their camp to help him heal, not all of the camp members are thrilled about this which causes friction. Aury is so shy, timid, soft spoken and gentle, he only really speaks to Rig at first but watches Ghost and its clear the pair feel drawn to one another. Slowly their connection grows through reading to each other & Aury helping Gage with his pet chickens and things soon start progressing to a more romantic vibe between them and when they get there their chemistry is palpable. The lead up to that first kiss had me in a choke hold. The way Aury would wrap his wings around Gage melted me every time!

Aury is such a sweetheart... until he isn't. 👀 That is all I will be saying about that so as not to spoil anything, but that scene was incredible! Love a protective MMC! We got to meet yet more side characters in this that I know have books later in the series which I can't wait to get to, Rigs, Lilac & Moth were just great and Lily gave us just enough to intrigue & endear them to the reader. The world building continued to be fantastic without being overbearing to the story, each book just adds another layer to this world and I love it. Michael Lesley's performance was once again incredible and I think the voice he chose for Aury was perfect! I'm now both stupidly excited and extremely nervous to do book 4 because of how much I've loved the first 3. 😂 🌶🌶🌶

Good story

I enjoyed this story. It was slower than the previous two books and there wasn’t a lead character overlap which was so perfectly done in books 1 & 2. However, this book does have good drama and endearing characters. Narration was good but slow. I listened at a much faster speed.

So good!

The anxiety boys are here! I love this series and am really enjoying getting to return to this world with each new audiobook release. This book is definitely where the world and cast of characters starts to expand a lot and the narration continues to be spot on! It’s super easy to keep track of each character, and I can’t wait for each new character to get their time to shine when their book is on audio!

Great continuation of the series

I loved this story when I first read it. The sweetness, shyness of the characters spoke to me. I loved the audio version even more.

Michael Lesley keeps outdoing his performance on these series by creating amazing voices for all the characters. They are so unique and he does a fantastic job “finding” the right voices to represent the characters so perfectly. The way he performs the softness in Ghost’s voice and the gentle accent in Aury’s, weaved with the soft tones of old posh British-English is just perfect way to represent Aury’s age. Such a creative idea, we’ll done.

Highly recommend.

Okay

Wasn't as enjoyable as the previous few. The story struggled somewhat with predictability and clichés and did feel a lot like a filler/middle story for the series. Introducing upcoming characters and future stories.

The meek pushover character, who may or may not get their small victories here and there, isn't my jam either. Can't relate with the constant wallowing, self-pity, resentment and quiet suffering, while just letting people bulldoze over you and backing/ doubling down even when friends stand up for you.

Good

It was not as good as the two previous books and I wasn’t as obsessed as I was with books 1&2.
BUT I enjoyed it. It was very good. It was a bit dragging though, especially towards the end.
