Alder Allensworth, MM, LMHC, RN was born in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. She first learned to sail in 1976, at the U.S. Navy base in Charleston, South Carolina where her father was stationed as chief dental officer. She received her bachelor’s degree from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri in 1979, and went on to the University of Missouri, Kansas City where she became certified as a Music Therapist. It was in Kansas City where she learned to windsurf and began competing on a regular basis. Alder worked as a music therapist in Missouri and then moved to Clearwater, Florida to further her sailing experiences and work as a music therapist. She returned to graduate school at the University of Miami in 1986, and received a master’s degree in music therapy and behavioral medicine in 1990. She received her license as a mental health counselor in 1998, then completed an associate degree in nursing and became a registered nurse in 2016. Professionally, she has worked as a therapist in the areas of mental health, medical rehabilitation, hospice, and elder law. During the past three decades, Alder has been a much sought-after keynote speaker and presenter for a variety of international, national, and local associations. She has been featured on television and radio, as well as in newspaper articles with an international distribution. She is a published writer for international and nationally distributed magazines, and also contributes articles to local newspapers and newsletters. Alder currently lives in Tampa, Florida with her husband, Ben Ritter.
