Dr. Childs was a medical student at Parkland Hospital the day the mortally wounded President Kennedy was brought to the emergency room. His book, We Were There, brings together the memories of the medical students, interns, residents, and attending physicians who were eyewitnesses as the tragedy unfolded before them. Dr. Childs has been a psychiatrist for 47 years. He served as the US Army’s Chief of Mental Hygiene for the Island of Oahu during the Vietnam War where he published the first report on the soldier addicts of that conflict. He has authored 24 papers in fields as diverse as brain injury, rehabilitation medicine, psychopharmacology and treatment-resistant aggression. In 2010, he published Sixth Street (Arcadia Publications). He spent his childhood on Austin’s famed East 6th Street, after it had been historic and before anyone realized it was. His family’s mom and pop shoe store was imbedded in a rich multiracial matrix—the Lebanese, Hispanics, African-Americans and Jews. The street’s 170 years of periodic decay and vibrant rebirth are remembered. Dr. Childs divides his time between his homes in the Washington D.C. area and in Dripping Springs, west of Austin, Texas.
