People often talk about Strategy and Leadership as if they are based in some complicated calculus or foreign language. I believe they are about people. The ability to inspire, the ability to coach, the ability to focus in a particular direction all come down to people. Leadership is about people. Leaders are called upon to create opportunities or to solve problems, but the currency we work in involves attracting followers, and moving teams. Great leaders understand "how the sausage is made" but also recognize that the value of "the sausage" is the experience it provides their customers. Great Leaders lead by serving their organizations, they lead by seeing and unapologetically seizing opportunity, and they lead by never accepting quitting. My focus is on creating great leaders in life. Leaders in life aren’t limited to the needs of an organization. They focus on how to make their communities better, how to help children prosper, and how to constantly increase quality of life. Leaders in life focus on creating joy through passionately expressing gratitude. A focus on Joy and Gratitude is like a super power in today’s world. I arrived at this focus through a series of indirect paths. A standard education through College led me to my first job teaching English in Japan. From there I spent time in a family manufacturing company rising to a role as VP of Customer Development. I transitioned to a role providing coaching and consulting, growing corporate leaders, still focused on lessons learned when I earned my MBA. Over the next 13 years I learned how superficial those lessons were. How they didn’t lead to real success, and that real success is denominated not in dollars, but instead in moments of gratuitous gratitude and unexpected Joy. These are the things that make us human. This is where I focus my energy now. Helping Leaders learn to be servant leaders, leading with gratitude and recognition, as opposed to giving orders. This creates teams that passionately follow because they love where you are going.
