Back in the 80s, while my classmates were perfecting their perms and pretending to care about algebra, I was elbows-deep in a Hilary notebook, scribbling out my own YA crime thrillers. At lunch, my friends would practically mug me for the next chapter—forget cafeteria food, they were hungry for plot twists. Teachers tried to redirect my attention (“Focus, dear!”)—but how could I possibly concentrate when my adoring readers were waiting for their next fix out in the smoking area? Literary fame (well, hallway fame) waits for no one. Then came the day my Writing Craft teacher tossed me a copy of The Outsiders and casually mentioned that S.E. Hinton wrote it at sixteen. Subtle move, but it hit hard. I realized then that stories could change people—even if they’re scribbled in the margins of math notes. Fast-forward a few decades, and I’m still chasing that same rush. I teach at-risk youth by day and write about them by night—some grown, some still raw, all trying to outrun their ghosts and find something like hope. And when I see readers review my books, love my characters, or dissect my plotlines? I devour those words like a teenager devours a secret love note in homeroom. Writing still makes me feel authentic—maybe even a little rebellious. And that’s a feeling I’ll never outgrow.
