To say Edith Stein lived a remarkable life would be a dramatic understatement. Born in Breslau (then part of Germany) at the end of the 19th century, Edith was raised as an observant jew, only to turn her back on religion right around the time World War I devastated the continent. In the wake of the war, during which she earned a doctorate and began working as an assistant at the University of Freiburg, she began reading the works of the legendary St. Teresa of Ávila, one of the most influential Catholic saints in history.

The present work contemplates the encounters of Jesus with the principal feminine figures of the New Testament in accord with the method of prayer proposed by St. Ignatius of Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises and offers material for silent meditation. In this interior journey, the listener is accompanied in a particular way by the philosopher and Discalced Carmelite, Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), and her insights, experiences, and reflections on the mystery of woman.

While the author never knew Edith Stein personally, her writings had a profound effect on her, and she came to view Edith Stein as a spiritual friend. Saint Edith Stein was born in Poland on October 12, 1891. Her parent were Jewish. She was a brilliant student. When she turned seventeen, she entered a Girl's High School in Breslau. At the same time, in another part of Germany, another teenager - Adolph Hitler was failing an entrance exam to the Academy of Arts and already blaming it all on the Jews. Two teenagers, one a Saint and the other damned to hell for all eternity.

This is a podcast series for Lent based on the writings of St Edith Stein. Days 1-16 are based on St Edith Stein’s essays on women and discuss God’s purpose for women and the unique gifts that women bring to any vocation. Days 17-40 will focus on St Edith Stein’s The Science of the Cross, which include meditations on St John of the Cross’s Dark Night of the Soul.
