Horatio Clare's first book, 'Running for the Hills', won the Somerset Maugham Award; "the prose equivalent of a collection of poems by Ted Hughes, or even Wordsworth," said the Sunday Times. His second, 'Truant' is "a stunningly-written memoir", according to the Irish Times. 'A Single Swallow' ('Travel writing at its very, very best' - Daily Mail) was shortlisted for the Dolman Travel Book of the Year: it follows the migration of barn swallows from South Africa to Wales. 'Down to the Sea in Ships' won the Stanford-Dolman Travel Book of the Year. Horatio's first book for children, 'Aubrey and the Terrible Yoot' won the Brandford Boase Award 2016 for best debut children's book. Recent books include The Light in the Dark ('prose-poetry of mesmerising lyricism' - The Spectator); Icebreaker (about Finland, ice and ships); a walk across Germany in the company of J S Bach, an elegy for one of the world's rarest birds and the acclaimed Heavy Light, the story of a breakdown and a healing.
