Iona Bain is a writer, author, speaker, broadcaster and founder of Young Money; the first British website dedicated to young people’s finances. She is a regular presence on TV and radio, and is quoted frequently in national and online press. Iona is a writer for the award-winning FT Money section in the Financial Times and recently became Money Hacker in residence at BBC Radio 1’s Life Hacks show, regularly broadcasting her down-to-earth money advice to young people across the UK. She is a stalwart contributor to BBC programmes such as Woman’s Hour, Newsnight and Moneybox, which she has guest-presented. Other appearances have included ITV Tonight, The One Show, Sky News, BBC Breakfast, Radio 5 live, Radio 4’s Broadcasting House, Channel 4 News, BBC Scotland and the Max Keiser Report on RT. Podcast appearances range from the Spectator’s flagship Edition show to Free the Geezer with rap group The Manor. She is also a staple of online youth-focused media, with recent appearances including VICE UK, Vogue and Refinery 29. Her journalism and commentary has appeared extensively in both national and regional media, including the Times, Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail, Independent, New Statesman, Scotsman, Herald and Spectator. Iona was shortlisted for a UK Press Award in 2020, where she was nominated by Women in Journalism for the Georgina Henry Award, and was named IPSE’s Freelancer of the Year in 2018. She was named one of Onalytica’s top 20 most influential women in finance in 2019 and is also officially one of the UK’s top “cash queens”, according to the Sun’s Fabulous Magazine! She is proud to be the youngest governor of the prestigious Pensions Policy Institute and a founding member of the agenda-setting Next Generation Pensions Committee. She is also a strong supporter of the charity Future Asset, presenting its 2019 conference and judging its 2020 competition in an effort to get more young women into finance and investing. Iona published her first book – Spare Change – in 2016 and is currently working on a follow-up. She is also an in-demand speaker, having appeared at scores of leading industry conferences and public events. Engagements include the Henley Literary Festival, PIMFA’s annual Summit, Moneyweek’s annual conference, appearing on a Pensions Question Time panel at the PLSA Conference (with the real Fiona Bruce) and speaking at the FT Women at the Top Summit. Iona is originally from Edinburgh, where she trained as a classical/pop musician, and studied music at Oxford University. She is jointly based in Scotland and London, and is still an active musician in her spare time.
