Over my 12 years as a pelvic physiotherapist I have met many mothers whose goal was to feel stronger. Strength is about feeling more capable, having a body that is resilient and tackling challenges with ease, and it goes far beyond the physical. For many mums, strong means being able to lift their baby, wear them in a sling or run after a toddler. Strong might mean a pelvic floor which defies the squeamish “bladder weakness” adverts. Or it might mean strength powerful enough to tackle the legacy of pregnancy and birth following the trauma of baby loss. Each experience requires a strength that we often take for granted. Through my career so far I have had the honour of working with hundreds of women with these very goals. Some weren't even sure if it was strength they needed but it is very often what they are most grateful for. I am very often asked "why didn't anyone tell me this before" and hear "I wish I'd known this when my babies were born". The third most often heard expression is "You must write a book and share this with all women". And so I wrote about everything I've seen, experienced and share on a daily basis in my clinical practice. As a physiotherapist and Pilates teacher I have always been happiest treating and rehabilitating those with back and pelvic pain, but until I added my gynaecological skills and knowledge I knew I was only treating half of the picture. I was treating only what was hurting, moving and responding on the outside, but what about all that lies within? The floor of the pelvis and all of it's untapped strength! And so I specialised in womens health, treating the entire person, all the layers, all the functions and dysfunctions. I became motivated to empower women to feel stronger through their pregnancies and after. I enjoyed supporting them through the amazing changes within their bodies and enjoying their recoveries following birth. And then I became a mother myself and I learnt much from my own body. Through these incredible journeys I found my passion. Now I share a rehabilitation space; Four Sides London, with my business partner Claire and our husbands where the words "Move, Feel, Live Stronger" emblazon the walls. Four Sides has become a hub for families in our community and I have loved working with all who have entrusted me with their post natal recoveries, many of who have become great friends! They gave me the confidence and encouragement to share all of this with you. I’ve written this book as a complete guide and I really hope that one day ALL mothers have access to Stronger is all about empowering mothers to reach their goals no matter how long “post-partum”. I hope that you find it a super helpful resource. Megan x
