Miguel Alcubierre was born in 1964 in Mexico City. He studied physics at the National University of Mexico (UNAM), and later obtained a PhD from the University of Cardiff in Wales, United Kingdom, on the subject of numerical relativity under the supervision of Prof. Bernard F. Schutz. He later worked for a number of years as a member of the numerical relativity group at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, Albert Einstein Institute, in Potsdam, Germany. In 2002 he returned to Mexico, where he is currently a Professor at the Nuclear Sciences Institute of the National University, in Mexico City.
