Eldest of three boys whose father was an orthopedic surgeon, Peter McBride lived in a secluded wooded area of Georgia through age 5. It was a time of segregated schools that he did not understand and close calls with snakes that he did. A move to the Philadelphia suburbs came next with its, “Hey yo!” culture, insulting one another by using hand gestures while making bullying a sport. He did not participate. But those first-snow mornings were unforgettable and the three-story brick school buildings were magnificent places of learning. At age 9 the family moved to Los Angeles where he attended a college preparatory school for boys until ninth grade and then a public high school. He made life-long friends at both. Football and swim teams, along with surfing, were his passions. Two years in the Navy followed, and then several years as a traveling program director for Los Angeles Schools. Along the way the author earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees as well as two teaching credentials, was honored as “Student of the Year” at Cal State Los Angeles, and taught at numerous schools, public and private, elementary, and secondary. At one private school he served as acting Head of Middle School. He was also a traveling educational speaker for University of Phoenix. He married, has two grown sons, and is now a grandfather. Presently he works with his wife in their media production company as co-producer and also does voiceovers. Through Arts for Learning in San Diego, he has enjoyed presenting stories and songs to children in schools and libraries. Though retired from teaching, with guitar in hand, he finds substitute teaching a few times a month rewarding, especially when a student asks, “Will you be here tomorrow?” The author has two sayings which he considers precious and have guided him throughout his career and life: “It’s for the kids,” and from the Disney movie, Dear to My Heart, “It’s what you do with what you got.” Though “got” is, admittedly, a vague, non-descriptive verb, he hopes what you “got” from reading this book makes a positive difference in your life and in those around you!
