I am a 25-year veteran of the advertising industry. During that time I helped create campaigns for a client list that included everything from cars to fast food, beer, lingerie and tourism. My better work received national and international accolades from the biggest advertising awards competitions in the world. I'm currently a marketing columnist and freelance writer. I'm also an avid golfer. My literary heroes are Robert B. Parker (the master), Robert Crais, Carl Hiaasen, Lee Child, and Walter Mosley. My first novel, Grass, wove together advertising, crime, and revenge. (The latter being central to the first two.) While writing the sequel, Slice, I decided to go off on a tangent and publish a novella about a chef who finds himself in a pressure cooker of another variety. I like protagonists who are 'everyman' characters. They take lumps almost as often as they give them. Think Harrison Ford. Is the advertising business a good background for a novelist? I believe so. You're trained to never take the audience's interest for granted. That's why the ads are often more exciting than the Super Bowl.
