Story
Zephaniah transformed performance poetry when he came onto the scene in the 1980s and has gone on to convey political and societal messages through his work. He’s also written numerous novels, children’s books and plays as well as releasing multiple albums. A multitalented man with an uneasy childhood and mixed up teen years, he has plenty to say in his autobiography. When he came to the studio, he spoke about overcoming his shyness, writing about his mum and what the West can learn from the rest of the world about peace.

What a privilege

An interview with Benjamin Zephaniah
Benjamin Zephaniah is a pioneer of performance poetry – he has a different take on it, a different style of performance, than others had when he began. And the fact that he went from gang leader to poet is only one facet of his varied and inspirational life. His autobiography, The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah, delves into his upbringing all the way to the present, and in this interview he reveals some parts of his story, from where he found the courage to get on stage to perform to Janet Street-Porter getting gifted a pig. He also recounts what it was like to create the book and audiobook, including interviewing his mother and feeling emotional in studio when he was narrating. A man with a strong sense of fairness and compassion, it’s always a joy to hear from Zephaniah.
