About this listen

Some say that Andy Dalziel wasn't ready for God, others that God wasn't ready for Dalziel. Either way, despite his recent proximity to a terrorist blast, the Superintendent remains firmly of this world. And, while Death may be the cure for all diseases, Dalziel is happy to settle for a few weeks' care under a tender nurse.

Convalescing in Sandytown, a quiet seaside resort devoted to healing, Dalziel befriends Charlotte Heywood, a fellow newcomer and psychologist, who is researching the benefits of alternative therapy. With much in common, the two soon find themselves in league when trouble comes to town. Sandytown's principal landowners have grandiose plans for the resort -- none of which they can agree on. One of them has to go, and when one of them does, in spectacularly gruesome fashion, DCI Peter Pascoe is called in to investigate -- with Dalziel and Charlotte providing unwelcome support.

But Pascoe finds dark forces at work in a place where medicine and holistic remedies are no match for the oldest cure of all!

A great story read wonderfully

For me, Reginald Hill is the best detective writer. Good plots, character development, and believable dialogues with laugh out loud moments. And no one tells these stories better than Jonathan Keeble. You completely forget you’re listening to one person reading. Absolute perfection!

Superb - Hill at his best

I've been waiting for Audible to get this. I first heard it on loan from my local library. It's wonderfully plotted. Hill must have had a 'crime board' to keep track of his plotting and characters. Crafted beautifully with twists and turns. He knits everything together with the utmost skill. Jonathan Keeble's narration is wonderful.
I never get tired of listening to it and discover new vocabulary (not keen on some of Dalziel's coarser language), new twists and connections I hadn't noticed before. EXCELLENT.

The way he takes on all the charecters and how he reads.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A Roast too Far

Any additional comments?

Very gripping story

Highly original story, great character development and clever use of narration within emails. Entertaining characters and dialogue and wonderfully performed with distinctive voices.

Just one gripe

This is a great story and the range of voices that Jonathan Keeble can achieve are considerable and realistic. There is only one gripe though and that is the way he pronounces certain words like suicide, suite, sue, superior etc. He uses an old fashioned s-you in stead of soo. So superior should be sooperior and he pronounces it syouperior. I can accept it if it is a grand old dowager talking but certainly not when Andy Dalziel speaks. The other word that annoys me is rifled which he pronounces to rhyme with little instead of rhyming with trifle.

A great listen

Bravura performance by Jonathan Keeble! Engaging, quirky and full of humour. An interesting stylistic device using emails and recorded musings to carry the narrative - Hill never disappoints.
