About this listen

Reporter William Carver comes up against Big Tech's manipulation and suppression of truth from the mines of Chile to the turbulent streets of Hong Kong.

Knowledge is power. And they know everything.

The tech company Public Square believes in 'doing well by doing good'. It's built a multi-billion-dollar business on this philosophy and by getting to know what people want. They know a lot. But who else can access all that information, and what are they planning to do with it?

Reporter William Carver is an analogue man in a digital world. He isn't the most tech-savvy reporter, he's definitely old school, but he needs to learn fast - the people he cares most about are in harm's way.

From the Chilean mines where they dig for raw materials that enable the tech revolution, to the streets of Hong Kong where anti-government protesters are fighting against the Chinese State, to the shiny research laboratories of Silicon Valley where personal data is being mined everyday - A Cursed Place is a gripping thriller set against the global forces that shape our times.

fantastic story memorable performance.

i really liked this series of books , performed brilliantly by Johnathan Keeble, which us no surprise. However this is my favourite so far because it was easy to follow , developed key characters, full of action and a face pace, different in a current and modern way, just great story and great storytelling Highly recommend

…..and the rest??????

After another excellent storyline, we are left hanging, wanting more ( which is probably no bad thing, especially if there were to be another book). As usual, it is read expertly by Jonathan Keeble, whom I hope will keep recording for Peter Hanington. We hope that it will not be too long before the story continues.

A great read not a great ending

I love the stories and hate the endings. The first book I listened to was A Dying Breed, the end of that really disappointed me. I still went on to read A Single Source though and hoped it wouldn’t end the same way - it did!
And now I’ve finished A Cursed Place and that too was a disappointing end.
The unfinished endings obviously didn’t prevent me from reading all three of Peter Hanington’s books and throughly enjoying them.

Scarily plausible, a great story

Beautifully read, tense, meaty plot. Like the previous books by Peter Hanington, this was a well crafted and gripping story. Highly recommended.

Best William Carver book so far

I really enjoyed the storyline of this book. The way the the stories from the different locations came together into one was excellent; the dateline for each chapter at the start was really helpful. I also loved the narrator Jonathan Keeble. Each character voice was distinct enough that you knew each one as soon as you head it.

Worth a listen

Pretty good story overall. Felt like maybe the editor went a bit overboard in cutting it down in places, but decent nonetheless.

The narrator’s Scottish accent is just shockingly bad, almost all of his male American characters sound exactly the same, and the Chinese accents are probably not even culturally acceptable in 2021.

…but apart from these (rather serious) issues he does a genuinely great job. I’d love to hear him read a book with all
