About this listen
WINNER OF THE NEBULA AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL, 2022
WINNER OF THE LOCUS AWARD FOR BEST FIRST NOVEL
Cairo, 1912: though Fatma el-Sha'arawi is the youngest woman working for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities, she's certainly not a rookie, especially after preventing the destruction of the universe last summer.
So when someone murders a secret brotherhood dedicated to one of the most famous men in history, Al-Jahiz, Agent Fatma is called onto the case. Al-Jahiz transformed the world 50 years ago when he opened up the veil between the magical and mundane realms, before vanishing into the unknown. This murderer claims to be Al-Jahiz, returned to condemn the modern age for its social oppressions. His dangerous magical abilities instigate unrest in the streets of Cairo that threaten to spill over onto the global stage.
Alongside her Ministry colleagues and a familiar person from her past, Agent Fatma must unravel the mystery behind this imposter to restore peace to the city—or face the possibility he could be exactly who he seems....
P. Djèlí Clark is the winner of the Nebula, Locus and Alex Awards and has been shortlisted for the Hugo Award.

urban fantasy murder mystery adventure in Cairo
So fun, cool and great. Superb performance and narration. Great story and plot, great characters and tons of representation. And a good few laughs as well as more serious parts. What more do you want from an urban fantasy murder mystery adventure in Cairo?

Starting good, gets entangled
I like the start , the characters and world
But the story gets entangled in feminism and at the palace confrontation a pseudo logic takes over
Not my book

A good but not great fantasy adventure
A well written fantasy adventure with lack-lustre pacing and mystery. Overall I struggled to finish it but thought the world was really well formed (a little heavy handed sometimes) and the writing quality was good and the narrator easy on the ear.

A decolonial fantasy, with magic
I really enjoyed this story. The world is immersive and rich, and the characters entertaining. The performance was just right for the story and brought this thriving magical metropolis to life beautifully - though the emphasis on some words sometimes felt a little different from how I'm used to! One of the characters has an English accent and as a British person myself it felt like the performance was a bit "off" for them, but this was minor issue for an otherwise very good audiobook.

Not a steampunk fan, but enjoyed
It was a fun romp. For me, it did some of the regular steampunk things that turn me off — perhaps an over-reliance on environment and gadgets, genre convention, and one-liners where I’d have preferred more character depth and poetry. But that said, I found the core characters deep enough, and they got me emotionally engaged. I genuinely respect this work for subverting the glorification of empire and the romanticism of everything Victorian. I’d love to see steampunk evolve more in this direction, in which I’d be able to stomach more if it. With this story, I bought it, and could willingly join in the fun.

slow start ...good end
I almost gave up, but kept going and was rewarded by a stronger 2nd half. The character development and world building would swim me into the next volume. The narrator took some getting used to, but as with the story she finds her pace by midway and seems to be enjoying it as much as us by the end.
