Summary

The series follows the lives of the two surviving heirs, Aneurin and Caelin, who are symbolized by the two wolves of their family’s royal standard. Separated in childhood amidst their treacherous uncle’s violent conquest of Dumnonia, the two brothers have led utterly different lives as they have grown into manhood. A mystical strand of awareness binds them, however, and as the saga progresses, their paths begin to converge as each seeks out the other.
Both wolven kin are driven by the same unwavering purpose: to one day return to their homeland and reclaim their stolen kingdom together.

Disappointing
I loved the first book in the series, but this was a little disappointing. The story had little substance and was somewhat repetitive, the protagonist doubting himself, talking to the voice in his head and the action extremely limited. I got the distinct feeling that, with some skilful intertwining, books 1 & 2 could have been one longer text.
The humour of the previous book was also missing and the characters were more stereotyped. Fox’s previous characters were fully formed, yet these were barely rounded, moving through the text more like shadows than active performers in the plot.
Toby Gaffney’s delivery was again superb and he lifted this rather mundane and drawn out novel to four rather than three stars. He is wholly believable and it was his skill as narrator that got me to the end,
I will buy book 3 in this series, in the hope the plot and characters return to their previous level of accomplishment, however if this standard is maintained I may not finish it.
