***Includes a new foreword by Gary Lineker about football in lockdown***

Shortlisted for The Telegraph Sports Book Awards

'Lineker is nearly as good a presenter as I was a footballer' DIEGO MARADONA
'Hilarious, almost as funny as me' ALAN SHEARER
'This is Lineker unleashed. As a non-football nut I didn't expect to enjoy it, but between laddish anecdotes are passages of sudden tenderness. . . Lineker opens up, dislodging memories and reflections, not just about football but his whole life.' THE TIMES
_______________________________________________________________
'Football is a simple game. 22 players chase a ball for 90 minutes, and at the end the Germans always win.'

This book is inspired by the stories Danny and I have shared with each other about what life in football is really like: in the dressing room, in the commentary box, on the pitch and - with the appropriate pixellation - in the showers afterwards.

What's it really like to play with Messi? I wouldn't know, but I have starred alongside him in an advert for Walkers crisps. And, well, his performance was world-class.

And what is a life in football really like? You won't learn much from the dull-as-dishwater post-match interviews - it's a world of secrets, superstitions, laughs and personalities, and let me tell you, half of it you won't believe.

I've looked back at my playing days, from England to Leicester, Everton to Barcelona, Tottenham to, er, Nagoya Grampus Eight, and shared the chaotic behind-the-scenes secrets of Match of the Day - and Danny has chipped in with stories from a lifetime following the game as a fan.

From Italia '90 to Leicester's Premier League fairytale, from yellow cards to World Cup trophies (I've never been awarded either), from Gascoigne to Maradona, you'll find it all here - everything you always wanted to know about football, but didn't realise that you did.

A great listen from two amazing broadcasters

At time hilarious but also educational. Highly recommended. Lineker is interesting, and Baker is hilarious.

What an absolute gem!

The audiobook is as entertaining as it is informative. The juxtaposition experiences of Danny Baker and Gary Lineker may be a world a part but their love of football certainly has it's parallels.
An absolute must for any football fan.

some funny bits but lots of old stories retold

I love Danny baker and his work, and I really enjoyed this podcast when it was in do I looked forward to this book. Sadly there is not a lot of new material in here and although it's nice to hear some of the old stories again, it does seem a bit of a let down when you are expecting something new.

Nice listen

Enjoyed the listen! Love the history of Gary’s past but felt didn’t need some of Danny’s stories in there other than that great purchase

Made me laugh out loud

Two very different styles of storytelling that complement one another. Worth getting just for the Gazza story involving Tigers and a horse's head, wonderfully recounted by Danny Baker.

Absolute legends

Full disclosure: I'm not a massive footie fan. I can just about hold my own in a casual conversation on the subject. Thankfully, as you will know if you have listened to the Behind Closed Doors podcast, Lineker and Baker are both knowledgeable and entertaining without ever getting into the nerdy side of the sport. It's all about the quirky side of the game. I'm sure even a non-football fan would enjoy this audiobook, although it's fair to say some appreciation of the beautiful game will enhance your listening pleasure. As you'd expect from two of our best known broadcasters, the delivery is exceptional as they take it in turns to read chapters, starting with their childhood introductions to football right up to the current day.

Summary: it's like the podcast, but better organised and more fleshed out and, well, it's just basically better all round really.
