Summary

Just one sip of ale leaves Hawkin with a life-changing decision.

Isolated in the northern wilderness, Hawkin—an adventurer turned hermit—is fulfilled by the small joys of his simple life. He hunts and forages for food, tends to a small garden, maintains his humble cabin, and patrols the meandering trail that leads down to the sea.

After celebrating ten years alone in his woods, visitors begin to arrive. First an ancient monster, then a trio of monks with a peculiar set of skills. When the monks share their flagship ale with Hawkin, a transcendent experience leaves him with a choice: engage with the system screen he'd gladly disabled long ago, or pass on the chance to brew magic beer. Unable to forget the wondrous ale he tasted, Hawkin accepts the Brewer’s path.

The MC of this cozy, slice of life fantasy is an in-world character. He follows a quest path that allows him to level up on his own terms by picking the quests he is willing to take, and ignoring the rest. Along his crafting journey, Hawkin is joined by an OP monster with an insatiable appetite, a talkative goblin with a deep love of onions, and a blue, squirrel-like creature that's always in the mood to shoot dice. An interest in real-world beer brewing isn't necessary to follow the story or Hawkin’s progression.

such a genuinely lovely story

I loved all of the characters, especially Mr Thrush and Barnacle eyes.
it was such a relaxing story and the attention to detail throughout transported me to a log cabin, with a feast of food and ale.

Cosy LitRPG book about brewing

It was a bit of a slow start but I warmed to the story and enjoyed all the characters. To be honest the side character were a lot more interesting than the MC. The MC was nice guy and loved to brew. He was very generous, helpful and mature. His friendships and bonds with the other characters was the real star in this book.

It took me a bit of time to get used to the multiple POVs but once you got used to the chapter titles mentioning who's POV you are in I was fine.

My favourite parts was Thrush and his unusual POV and often simple views on life. A part from the brewing which is more like crafting I really enjoyed Thrush extended adventure. I also like Abigail and have high hopes for her in the second book.

James Ghoul narrated his own book which some people might find a red flag, especially when you see no other narrated audiobooks by him but trust me he did a great job. After finishing I found out that he has been narrating for over 7 years under various different pseudonym in other genres. His set-up was very professional and was consistent with his various distinct voices.

James Ghoul is either a brewer himself or it felt he did a decent amount of research. The brewing process and brewing skills were well described and though the MC and Abigail passionate perspective I really was invested. Also I enjoyed the world building, gods and other job systems.

I believe this is going to be trilogy based off a Royal Road series. Book 2 is already out on ebook so the audiobook hopefully isn't too far behind.

The only down point is the ending doesn't feel like a distinct cut off. This is often the case with Royal Road series which are often continuous stories with no distinct points to end one book and start a new one.

A breath of fresh air!

I found this to be an endearing and characterful lit rpg, with a refreshing focus on non combat skill progression. A Charming and addictive listen with strong narration, I look forward greatly to another work by James Ghoul. Well done sir!

That was great !

I'd first like to give thanks to the author (James Ghoul) for giving me a free copy of the audiobook.

things started at a slow pace with many things to question and understand, but then things started to pick up pace and became soothing & enjoyable.
I really liked the way that the story goes, it's both entertaining and relaxing.
I rate this book as highly as Beware of Chicken and Heretical fishing, they all have the same vibe and are a breath of fresh air to the litrpg genre.
I hope that many other people will read/listen to this book, I for one will be going for the next one straight away and them probably join the other's Patreon to be able to read the chapters of book 3.
I'll keep an eye on this series as it has quickly become one of my favourites, let us hope that the second audiobook will be released soon while wishing all the best to the author ^^
