Summary
Something terrible is on board Lady Balgay.
In 1914, fear and paranoia rule the high seas. Iain Cosgrove sets sail for a research trip aboard the last of Dundee’s once-grand sealing fleet.
Fueled by rum and the eerie tales of the crew, they obsess over ancient superstitions, which Iain dismisses as simple lore...until they reach the frigid Arctic seas.
Soon, Iain begins to question his beliefs. But none of them are prepared for what they are about face in the frigid, dark waters of the north.

Wonderful story but terrible narration
I really wanted to hear this story but the narrator is not good. Instead I read most of it in kindle format and it’s beautifully written with a great story. However the audible version is very difficult to listen to due to the narrator doing an accent that’s so bad I couldn’t even tell what he’s saying half the time.

Worst narration ever
It’s absolutely ridiculous that they couldn’t find a Scottish narrator. It’s impossible to listen to the story because the whole way through i was cringing at the insulting attempt at a Scottish accent from the American narrator, whose own voice is so monotonously boring it’s impossible to pay attention. Do not buy this on audible. I can’t comment on the actual book, as I wasn’t able to listen.

An absorbing historical fantasy
I thoroughly enjoyed this story with its gripping tale based in a past world.
Well written and atmospheric I felt as if I were there and loved the mix of characters.
A complaint would be that the narrator spoiled some of the story with his mispronunciations and mistaken intonations.
I am a Dundonian and loved the local references and names used of which some I am familiar.
However I feel I could have done a better narrative job - and I would have done it for free, if asked.

So badly read as to be unlistenable.
The assumed accent veered dangerously from continent to continent, then settled to FrancoIndian. At no time did it pass Scotland, what a pity. From the little I managed to listen to before throwing in the towel in he author had about the same grasp of the period, 1914 , as the narrator of accent. It comes across as Victorian, young ladies blushing ,simpering and preferring the waltz indeed. Save your time and definitely your effort for better things.
