About this listen

Having delivered a particularly stirring speech at his recently deceased colleague's funeral, Monsieur Pamplemousse is more than a little disturbed when the coffin explodes during the ceremony. Luckily, his faithful hound Pommes Frites gave out a warning cry just in time, so there were no casualties. But, who exactly is behind this explosion? And was the same person responsible for his late co-worker's demise?

This latest in their wild romps find the entertaining duo causing chaos at a prestigious hotel, where the dish of the day is red herrings. With delectable wit, sharp dialogue and a marvellous sense of timing, this is the latest in the adventures of Monsieur Pamplemousse and his beloved bloodhound.

‘Ello ‘ello for detective fiction

A real pleasure to revisit these books. The characters are charming, the plot funny and sinister by turns, and the narrator gets it exactly right without the dreadful cod French accent. I shall be reading more.

Espionage and gastronomy

Easy listening and lots of fun. 1st one I have listened too but I will be downloading the rest. A trip round Paris with Monsieur Pamplemousse and Pomme frite is not to be missed.

Wonderfully evocative of Paris!

So much enjoyed this little meander around Paris with Monsieur Pamplemousse and his faithful chien. At a time when visiting Paris is impossible because we are living through a pandemic this story helps one both to reminisce on past happy days and culinarily delights and to hope for a better future when we might once again follow recommendations from Le Guide and it’s 3 stock pot recommendations. Really hope that Audible will produce more of these books very soon.

Farcically funny in the best way.

Firstly, Michael Bond's writing is wonderful and the humour of the story shines through each and every line. Secondly, Bill Wallis' narration is second to none that I've heard. He is utterly magnificent with characterisation that brings the story to life in the most witty and sparkling way. I had a smile on my face throughout the reading, accompanied with laugh out loud moments on a regular basis. What's not to love in listening to a brilliant narrator of superb words expressing the free thoughts of a detective blood hound?

Daft fun!

The story was a no brainer! It was easy to work out the plot early on! However, Michael Bond's writing and Bill Wallis' telling kept me entertained throughout!

Sauce, Farce and Good Company

This is my third listen of the Monsieur Pamplemousse novels available on Audible and I was not disappointed. The opposite. I found the exchanges between Pamplemousse and his pompous boss, Henri Leclercq, extremely amusing and always smile worthy. The bloodhound, Pommes Frites was at his very best. The ever patient wife of Pamplemousse, Doucette is a nice yardstick of normality, and the range of other characters are as ever colourful and original. And yes, sauciness remains an ingredient in this series. I found myself increasingly interested on the French food and drinks, and would love to sample a Cardinal cocktail. The French do like to marry spirits or fortified wine with other wines. The underlying crimes to solve were ample vehicles for the novel which, for me, are character-centric. The audio-book is wonderfully and expertly performed by the late and missed Bill Wallis. He makes this novels vibrate with fun. His characterisation of Henri Leclercq is my favourite. This is a fun listen and is recommended. I am just a little sad that there is just one left to listen to.

I gave up in chapter 5

This book was not for me. The story went nowhere and the narrator put me to sleep. By chapter 5, there was only the merest hint of a plot and I just couldn't take any more.
