Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
'I was 21 years old when I found myself on the front stoop of the Playboy Mansion, its ornate front door feeling like a route to success. I want to tell the real story of my time there - the good and the bad, the dark and the light. The story I wish I'd heard as a young woman trying to find my way in the world. Before I showed up at a party, allowed myself to stay, and made the decisions that would shape my life.'
In 2008 the Playboy mansion became Crystal Harris's sanctuary - a shimmering vestige of power and opportunity. Within months she had ascended its hierarchical system to become Hugh Hefner's top girlfriend. But her new home came at a cost. Forced to follow strict rules which governed everything from her appearance to behaviour, she began to lose her identity. By the time she married Hef in 2012, the mansion had become her prison.
Before he passed away in 2017, Hef made Crystal promise to only say good things about the decade she spent in his world. After years of silence, in this gripping and honest memoir Crystal finally exposes the toxic culture at Playboy's core and the devastating effect it had on her health. In a world where so many still strive to achieve impossible beauty standards formed by the male gaze at the expense of their happiness, her extraordinary story of misogyny and objectification and ultimate journey to self-discovery reveals eye-opening lessons that are relevant to us all.

Important
I think this is an important story and possibly the only honest account of the consequences of making this choice. Crystal manages to tell this story simply and elegantly. I do hope she does not sell the rights to the playboy foundation, (though I suspect she has already and this for them, is an exercise in damage limitation) but to a person who can talk to the wider meaning of this story. Heff was the ultimate Wizard of Oz. A hurt boy who couldn’t love who convinces the world he is living the ultimate life and it was a life about freedom. The women at the mansion were literal ‘pets’, not people. And his poison became embedded in culture - a jailer, a controller, a powerful man controlling young women —— but people he was a defender of human rights! I think now we can understand these 2 things can exist in parallel with each other. Personally I would like to see a tv series that takes this rotten life apart and exposes it for what it was.

Telling her Truth
Fascinating to understand this world women choose to enter and then the horrible things they did to feel accepted

Interesting listen.
Inspired to listen from an interview I heard. An interesting listen, very repetitive and not a whole lot of depth.

It was just OK.
Not for me but I do wish krystal well. I struggled to stay interested and found it somewhat repetitive.

Exceptionally well written, vulnerable and brilliant. This book went far beyond my expectations
Nothing to dislike. This book is wonderful and brings the most delicate insight into a life and situation that everyone would find so easy to judge

A sad story
Well written and read. So sad that Crystal felt she could only live her life in a certain image.
