Summary
What does the chairman of the new Atlantic Defence Committee have to do with the American Civil War? And why was a top CIA trouble-shooter needed as a middleman - a middleman looking for David Audley, senior analyst for British Intelligence?
It all seems very wrong to Oliver St John Latimer, but it does present an interesting opportunity. Unfortunately for the ambitious and usually desk-bound Latimer, the opportunity is twice as deadly as it is intriguing.

Great story terrible narration
This in written form is a throughly enjoyable addition to Anthony Price's series. In this story the somewhat odious Oliver St. John Latimer its the lead character, accidentally and over-ambitiously taking (his rival) David Audley's place. He runs into trouble an has to be bailed out. The historical thread in this case the American civil war. Unfortunately the narration is uninformed and ignorant of the series and spoils the story. Audible should re-record it with a producer and actor who have understood the characters.

Quintessentially English book narrated by a Scot
Steve Cree is an experienced Scottish actor but not the right choice for this book. I expect a Scottish accent for books by Scottish authors set in Scotland. But sorry, the accent out of context just grated on my ear so I could not finish the book. I have ordered the hardback on Abebooks.
