1957, the suburbs of south east London. Jean Swinney is a journalist on a local paper, trapped in a life of duty and disappointment from which there is no likelihood of escape. When a young woman, Gretchen Tilbury, contacts the paper to claim that her daughter is the result of a virgin birth, it is down to Jean to discover whether she is a miracle or a fraud. As the investigation turns her quiet life inside out, Jean is suddenly given an unexpected chance at friendship, love and - possibly - happiness.

Couldn't stop listening.
I loved this book with its beautifully drawn characters and well observed, sad, often funny writing. I also appreciated the very thorough research that the author had done especially as I have lived in the area where the novel is set and am old enough to remember the 1950s.

A very good read
A very good read. I loved it but was saddened by the ending! I live in the same area which helped me to see aspects of the action more vividly. Well written Clare Chambers.

highly recommend
This is a change of pace for me, I normally read crime/thriller and got this on a whim in a 2 for 1 sale after seeing the good reviews. When I started listening to it I wasn't so sure, first few chapters are a little slow but after that I could not stop listening. This is probably the quickest time I have consumed an audiobook, ever. I just could not stop listening. Great writing, interesting and emotional storytelling and great Characters. 5* book that I will be recommending to friends & family!
*spoiler* the ending has absolutely broke me!😭

Beautifully Written
A wonderfully woven story. Each character has a strength of presence which in itself shows the outstanding talent of Clare Chambers. Lastly, I think audio books only work when the narration is ‘spot on’. Karen Cass did a marvellous job on this story.

One of the best books I’ve read
So well written and researched, lovely story - so 1950’s right down to the pea- souper fogs.

Kept me gripped
Great story! Intrigue, romance and drama with a well painted 1950s backdrop. Very enjoyable and I was sad when it ended

Intriguing mystery
Fascinating read, wondering where it would go. Slight disappointment with the end as there’s no clarity

Gentle story well told
A gentle story well told. Narration is a pleasure. Slow start that builds nicely. Twists and turns .
