About this listen

A cosy, twisty mystery that reintroduces the glorious characters we met in the bestselling The Postscript Murders - shortlisted for the Gold Dagger.

Natalka from Ukraine has quit her job as a carer and joined up with retiree, Edwin, to run a detective agency on England's south coast. Despite a steady stream of minor cases, Natalka is frustrated, longing for a big juicy investigation such as murder to come the agency's way. She is now living with dreamer, Benedict, who continues to run his coffee shack. Life gets complicated when her Ukrainian mother, Viktoria, joins them from her war-torn country - three's a crowd. Viktoria invades the tiny flat, cooking borscht and cleaning things that are already clean. To add to Natalka's irritation, Benedict and Viktoria get on brilliantly.

Edwin is a big reader of obituaries, so when a local obit writer, Dan Haynes, dies, Edwin decides to look further, only to discover a series of unexpected deaths. Are the clues in the obits themselves? Edwin decides to write an obit to see what clues it throws up. Then he disappears.

The chase to find him takes the team to London and back to the south coast, where the solution lies remarkably close to home.

Excellent narrator

I enjoy Elly Griffith books and this one didn't disappoint. The characters draw you in and the story is interesting. Nina wadia is a fantastic narrator - I'll be looking for other audio books she narrates. She is easy to listen to and puts just enough differentiation into the different characters voices to let you follow who is speaking.

Likeable characters with complex backstories. I enjoyed the story and would be happy to continue to follow them on their next exploits.

Murder mystery about writers

Good whodunnit. Very good performance except the Ukrainian accents are very over done! Would have liked more of Inspector Kour.

Another case for Natalka, Edwin and Benedict

This is the 4th book featuring DI Harbinder Kaur, although she is a peripheral character. Natalka, a young Ukrainian woman and Edwin, who is in his 80s, run a detective agency, helped by Natalka's partner, Benedict, an ex monk who now runs a coffee shop. This time they are hired to investigate the death of a romance writer by the woman's daughters.

This was a fun book to read, and as always with an Elly Griffith's book, it is expertly and intricately plotted with lots of humour. There are plenty of red herrings, and I didn't manage to work out whodunnit. The characters are well rounded and each has an interesting backstory. Can't wait to meet them all again!

The book is expertly narrated by Nina Wadia.

excellent narration

Nina Wadia is a joy to listen to. There's a Thursday Murder Club feel to this book but the resolution was disappointing.

So enjoyable I didn't want it to finish...

Great characters, intriguing plot, superbly written and performed. How long will we have to wait for the next one?
I love Elly Griffiths, really enjoyed Ruth Galloway series, but she surprises me with what a prolific writer she is and what a range of interesting characters from such diverse cultures and backgrounds she comes up with.
