Summary

Vera Stanhope, star of ITV’s Vera, returns in the tenth novel in number one bestseller Ann Cleeves’s acclaimed series.

Fifty years ago, a group of teenagers spent a weekend on Holy Island, forging a bond that has lasted a lifetime. Now, they still return every five years to celebrate their friendship, and remember the friend they lost to the rising waters of the causeway at the first reunion.

Now, when one of them is found hanged, Vera is called in. Learning that the dead man had recently been fired after misconduct allegations, Vera knows she must discover what the friends are hiding, and whether the events of many years before could have led to murder then, and now . . .

But with the tide rising, secrets long-hidden are finding their way to the surface, and Vera and the team may find themselves in more danger than they could have believed possible . . .

Enjoyed the story but not the ending

Another interesting Vera story, but in this one a few things about the characters just didn’t add up. I can accept that it can be true that not all elderly folk had grown wiser or nicer with age, but the twist didn’t add up for me, it was almost like the author had to take a pic in the end who had done it, and then make it fit somehow. Also the ending was very sad and upsetting. But still a good book.

thoroughly enjoyable

Not sure how Vera got to where she did with the killer, but very enjoyable and entertaining listen. Would buy more stories for when I'm painting again.

Great Stiry

Started off slow almost lost interest but then understood why as story unfolded. Thought Joe’s voice to slow, plodding deliberate not as I imagine him so narration not up to scratch - very slow and deliberate particularly at the start - needed more “spring” in the narration

Best read for ages

This was a long read. It was a really good story with excellent characterisation and you couldn’t work out who the killer was until almost the end. Very much recommended

Unlikely accents

Really unbelievable accents and deep slow voices to portray men that simply didn’t work. It grated badly and made it difficult to imagine the characters.

Big & beautiful

Vera as magnificent as ever . Enjoyed every moment everything you’d want from a good old fashioned whodunnit
Start from book one and work towards this plot driven story

I was about to give up!

The performance spoilt this book at the beginning I couldn't get away with the so called voices of Joe and Vera. Joe sounded like a thick Geordie. I continued and I'm glad I did I love Ann Cleeves books.
