Summary

'A fast-paced carnival of setbacks and skullduggery that reminds me of... me! Charming from the first twist to the last' Scott Lynch, author of THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA

The first in an extraordinary new fantasy epic, perfect for fans of Nicholas Eames and James Islington!

Lukan Gardova is a cardsharp, academy dropout, and - thanks to a duel that ended badly - the disgraced heir to an ancient noble house. His life consists of cheap wine, rigged card games and wondering how he might win back the life he threw away.

When Lukan discovers that his estranged father has been murdered in strange circumstances, he finds fresh purpose. Deprived of his chance to make amends for his mistakes, he vows to unravel the mystery behind his father's death.

His search for answers leads him to Saphrona, fabled city of merchant princes, where anything can be bought if one has the coin. Lukan only seeks the truth, but instead he finds danger and secrets in every shadow.

For in Saphrona, everything has a price - and the price of truth is the deadliest of all.

Fun read

Really enjoyed this, was fun with an interesting setting. Well narrated. Felt a good bit like Lies of Locke Lamora so fans of that will probably enjoy this too. Looking forward to the next one now.

Fantastic Fantasy

An incredible voice performance paired with an equally incredible story. Hope their narrator returns for the rest of the series!

Fun but flawed

This was an enjoyable listen great world building, subtle magic system and a murder mystery/ investigation with intrigue which I loved.

The narrator did an excellent job

The biggest flaw in this book were the characters the main one is an idiot, who seems to lack any real skill or talent and he drinks way too much for someone who is supposed to be resolute to his cause or purpose. His lack of maturity is also a problem he has a temper and goes from man with a plan to a man child. The other characters are interesting but lack real depth.
This is a book with great potential let down by its flaws in my opinion

Good debut novel but not excellent

I enjoyed this but it was not without its flaws. I have seen a lot of comparisons to the Lies of Locke Lamora however the prose is not in the same league. The book is written in a very close third person to a single POV character. At times it felt so close that I almost wanted it to be in first person. At other times it reminded me of Morphius in the Sandman by Neil Gaiman which is not a bad thing.

The plot is very safe and formulaic. Again this is not always a bad thing however there was nothing that makes me want to come back and read it again. This is not one of those books I will be coming back to for years. The protagonist and their sidekick is something we have seen before and the relationship between them is predictable but it works. In many ways the novel could be considered to be young adult, the stakes are never too high and the violence is tame. It reminded me of the Abhorsen trilogy in this regard.

I will be reading the sequels and I hope the author is prepared to take more risks in his next books. Overall this is a fun read but not without its flaws.

The voice actor is excellent.

Pulpy Fantasy

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, both the narrative and the performance.

The story is a relatively straightforward romp with no delusions of grandeur or pretentiousness. Those looking for creative world building and engaging (if archetypal) characters will get a lot from this.

You wont regret spending a credit on this one

I do not usually write reviews, but I really thought this novel deserved one and I wanted to give it a shout-out. I am positive that most fantasy readers will enjoy it as much as I did. This is a fantasy story in the tradition of Michael J. Sullivan and Brent Weeks that you do not find often any more here among all the litrpg (which I also enjoy).

It is a classic fantasy story filled with action and the solving of a murder mystery. The main characters are interesting and likeable but not flawless. The world-building is good and the magic is just hovering in the background, not too invasive, a mystery in its self.

Excellent!

The reader and the writer both deserve applause. The characters came to life so well that I feel like I want to congratulate the cast only to remember it was one single person.

Such an easy listen in the best way possible.

5 Stars! Amazing

"Lukan, don't throw your life away."
"I already have, I threw it away years ago, the moment I agreed to that damned duel."

5 Stars from me, a new favourite. Had everything in it that I was looking for. A sarcastic, swaggering hero with a touch of PTSD from his past. A sidekick who isn't one to be looked over or ignored, if anything, she stole every scene she was in.

A bustling fantasy city, not crammed full of unnecessary info, shown and explained as far as the story needed, with space to elaborate on in future books.

Magic that wasn't too centre stage.

Lukan Gaedova & Flea were amazing characters to read.
