Shardlake as expected
This is typical Shardlake, well researched and accurate as usual. It has a good plot with twists and turns. The loss of one star is because I think the whole cast must have respiratory problems. Throughout the book they are all taking 'deep breaths'. Irritating!

Excellent as always
As with all of the Shardlake series CJS has presented a well written combination of known commentary with amazing gap filling.
As an avid reader of Tudor based books, this fills a huge gap in my understanding of the period immediately following the death of Henry VIII.
If you do listen to this book, keep going after the epilogue. CJS presents comprehensive details of his sources along some more narrative about the time of the Rebellion.
Whilst it is recommended that you read the Shardlake series in order, each book (including this one) has enough background to previous events to bring new readers up to speed. Also and of equal importance to existing fans, the references are manged well and in fact form a useful aide memoire. Enjoy!! 😉

A Superb Book
I have loved all the Shardlake novels. They are all written with reference to real life events and the characterisations are believable and attractive to the reader.

Protracted
I was so looking forward to this latest 'Shardlake' offering, but was disappointed this time. A very convoluted storyline seemed to lose its way part way through, almost as if the author was trying to eke out the chapters rather than concentrating on holding his audience. I'm sorry to say it was a labour of love to finish it.

Totally absorbing !
Once more Matthew is on a murder case - and once more Sansom's impeccable research substantiates a gripping yarn of Tudor politics, crime, and revolution. Total, bloody realism is all-pervasive and completely addictive. I cant wait for No 8!

Excellent storyline
Excellent storyline and characters as with all the previous Matthew Shardlake novels. The historical background has been well researched and gives an interesting insight to a time in history I knew very little about. I highly recommend this book
